Default Clear Maintenance Required Light

At 5,000 miles the maintenance required light comes on. This is to remind me to change the oil/filter. Does anyone know how to get this light to turn off? I change the oil/filter myself.

Set the odometer to ODO (not trip).
Turn the key off.
Press and hold the ODO button.
Turn the key on.
Continue holding the button while the light goes through a series of flashes. When it stops flashing, turn the key off and release the button.

Turn the key back on to make sure it "took".

Repeat every 5k

Just did it and the ODO displays "----" then "---" then "--" then "-" and it's reset. Did you buy the service manual to find that? There sure is not anything in the owners manual..

see page 136 of the '04 Highlander Owner's Manual

(o) Engine Oil Replacement Reminder
Light (for vehicles sold in U.S.A.)
This light reminds you when to replace
the engine oil.
This light will come on when the ignition
key is turned to “ON” and will go off after
about a few seconds.
When you drive for about 7200 km (4500
miles) after the engine oil replacement,
this light illuminates for about 3 seconds
and then flashes for about 12 seconds
with the ignition key turned to the “ON”
position. If you continue driving without
replacing the engine oil, and if the distance
driven exceeds 8000 km (5000
miles), the light will come on after the
ignition key is turned to “ON” position.
The light will remain on thereafter.
If the light is flashing, we recommend that
you replace the engine oil at an early
opportunity depending on the driving and
road conditions. If the light comes on,
replace it as soon as possible.
The system must be reset after the engine
oil replacement. Reset the system by
the following procedure:
1. Turn the ignition key to the “OFF” position
with the odometer reading shown.
(For details, see “Odometer and two
trip meters” on page 127 in this Section.)
2. Turn the ignition key to the “ON” position
while holding down the trip meter
reset knob.
Hold down the knob for at least 5 seconds.
The odometer indicates “000000”
and the light goes off.
If the system fails to reset, the light will
continue flashing.

I just gave you the procedure for the '04 Rav4, except the maint light flashes a series of codes while resetting. I've never paid any attention to what the ODO is doing. It's also the same procedure as for the 4-Runner, so I made an educated guess that Highlander would be the same.

nh, you are correct, it is in the manual. I only went to the index and couldn't find it... I like the Tundra reset procedure better though, do nothing.

Toyota Rav 4

The procedure is correct. However it doesn't work from the ODO screen you have to do it from the Trip A screen.

Set odometer to Trip A
Turn the key off
press and hold the ODO button.
Turn key to ON
Continue holding button while the light goes through the series of the ----countdown and then flashes 0000. Release the button and turn key to OFF.

Thats it!
