HighlanderGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
This is a discussion thread titled "2004 Highlander Cruise Control not Resuming", within the Highlander forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Has anyone had an issue with the cruise control not resuming? We will set the speed and then when we need to resume, sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. So far, we have not figured out a pattern.
I will have the dealer look at it but just wanted to know if anyone else has had the problem and if so, what was done to fix it. Thanks.
Be sure that you have not allowed the vehicle to slow down below 25mph while the cruise control is active. Also, touching the break pedal will cancel the cruise function and clear the set speed from memory. Here is a quote from the HL 2004 new car features document.
"The low speed limit is the lowest speed that cruise control can be set and is designed at approx. 25 mph (40 km/ h). The cruise control cannot be set below that speed. If the vehicle speed drops below that speed while running in the cruise control mode, the cruise control is cancelled automatically and the set speed in the memory is cleared."
CANCELLING THE PRESET SPEED
You can cancel the preset speed by:
a. Pulling the lever in the “CANCEL”
direction and releasing it.
b. Depressing the brake pedal.
If the vehicle speed falls below about 40
km/h (25 mph), the preset speed will automatically
cancel out.
If the vehicle speed drops 16 km/h (10
mph) below the preset speed, the preset
speed will also automatically cancel out.
If the preset speed automatically cancels
out other than for the above cases, have
your vehicle checked by your Toyota dealer
at the earliest opportunity.

Update: 08/30/2004. After doing more research as well as re-reading some of these posts, I believe that it is when the vehicle goes below 25 mph, it cancels out the resume speed out of its memory. Strange (never had this on another vehicle) but I guess that it is not a defect. I notice it everytime going through tolls. I believe that this changed with the 2004 year. See 2004 New Car Features pages 635-636.
My '04 HL does the same and I could not figure it out. Seems like odd behavior. All the other cars I have had remembered the cruise speed until you turn off the key(Buick Riv, Q45, Honda Prelude, GMC Truck, Mountaineer, Corvette). The HL seems to remember if I tap the brake but do not slow to below 40.
I read the owners manual today and the resume will work unless you slow below 25mph, then you must reset it every time you stop.
Toyota seems to desigh the cruise control differently than other manufactures. It is not a deadly problem but I hate this design. I should have the control to cancel or erase the memory only if I wish to do so...
Pretty much like the daytime running lights, I should have the control to turn it automatically on or off by demand...
