HighlanderGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
This is a discussion thread titled "Rear ended!", within the Highlander forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
My wife and kids were rear-ended while stopped at a light. Son is fine. Daughter has sore shoulder. Wife has sore chest & some heart irregularities -- still being checked out (concern is internal bruising/swelling, I guess).
The surprising thing is the Highlander appears undamaged beyond some scuffs on the rear bumper cover. I crawled under the car looking for damage and made sure all doors and the rear hatch still work & look fine. Couldn't find a thing amiss. Even the styrofoam behind the aluminum rear bumper looked undaged.
Is there anything in particular I should look for? Insurance will be looking the vehicle over... I just want to be sure nothing important is missed.

Make sure the frame is not out of whacked. This would really make an issue to your wheel alignment and vibration/shaking of the vehicle at moderate to high speeds. Other than that I am not sure.. except for thd cosmetics (Scratches/Dents) to the body.
I would also take a close look at the bumper mounting brackets, they are designed to absorb some of the energy by bending.
I was rear ended in my Tundra, bumper looked almost perfect, but the brackets were bent.

I got rear ended in the same way by a corolla. The corolla took some heavy damage to its front end, but I got away with some minor scratches on the underside of the bumper. The guy at the autobody place I was at checked the seams around the rear wheel area near the bumper to see if anything got pushed out of alignment, among the other various checks that he did (which you mentioned you already did).
I hope your wife is ok, thats the most important part

Just wanted to pipe in and let you know that the TEXAS TUNDRAS want to express our concern for your family and are hope that everything is OK. Doesn't sound too bad so that's a good thing.
Just to note when there is a rear end collision involved its almost about 90% that the person who hit you from behind that receives the most damage.
And this is with any vehicle not just a toyota Highlander.
And in almost every case other than a swoop and squat, that is the way the damage should be meted out.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
