HighlanderGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
This is a discussion thread titled "Front door locks", within the Highlander forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
First, I'm a new member, new 2005 Highlander standard model, V6, very pleased in the first 200 miles, have not had a Toyota since 1980 to 1982.
I have reviewed the threads on power locks, and I was surprised the Highlander has no auto-lock (speed activated), but I have a related question: When the doors are locked, is there a way to have the interior front door handles open the lock when you pull the interior handle to open the door? I don't believe I've ever had a car that required you to manually (or power) unlock before the front doors will open, although I know some cars have operated that way, and I know that back doors typically require manual unlocking from inside. Very frustrating coming from an auto-lock, easy-open prior car so I just thought I'd ask if there's a solution. The salesman says all his Highlanders work that way, but we'll check with service this Saturday.
Glad to be here, and thanks in advance if someone has a solution.
Not sure about speed activation on the locks on a Highlander but I believe the deactivation of the door handle operation is related to a child safety issue. Don't know if it's a Federal requirement or just a judgement item by Toyota. Someone else in the group will add any additional info I'm sure.
Welcome to the group and as you've probably already seen it is a great group of owners.
Larry

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
I don't think I have seen a car since the late 60's that the door handle would both unlock and open the door. All the cars I've had since the 70's, with or without power door locks, require you to manually unlock the door first then the handle will open the door.
MMitsock: Sorry to provide a counter to you, but I do not believe I have had a car, ever, that did not unlock the lock from the front door pull handle. GM, Toyota, Ford, Saab, Audi, Mercedes, Chrysler, Jeep...I have had a lot of cars (38), 1966 through 2005, and I guess I have been lucky or fortunate. Even the 2005 Camry they gave us while they went to get our Highlander worked the way I expected. My 2003 Mercedes unlocks from the front (and rear, fyi) handles as long as the car is stationary. Admittedly, the Highlander works as you described, so our default has been to just not lock the doors when driving. I do know there have been cars that worked this way, I've just not had one. We like the car otherwise; this is definitely nothing but an adjustment in habit and I thought I was missing some setting I could invoke when I first posted this thread.
Maybe I misunderstood your original question. For sake of clarity lets say you are driving and you reach over and manually lock your drivers door. It is my experience that if you stop, turn off the car or truck, then pull on the door handle the door will not open unless you manually unlock the door. I'm assuming no automatic operation by the car or truck that unlocks the doors when the car is in park or turned off, the reverse of the automatic door locking when a vehicle is traveling above 10 mph.
The safety system I am familiar with for the rear doors is a lever on the butt end of the door that when engaged prevents the interior door handle from opening the door at all, locked or unlocked. The rear doors using the child safety locks can only be opened from the outside.
...for instance, in the situation you described: inside front door manually locked, '03 Mercedes E Class, the door handle opens the manually locked front door; prior to Highlander PT Cruiser: manual lock, front door opens lock. They both have had auto-lock at 15 mph but none of the cars I've had unlocked the car when you stopped or reached a low threshold speed. The driver or front passenger inside door handle has unlocked the door. Try a new Camry and you'll see the difference. The way the Highlander operates is like rear doors on cars I've had before. The child door safety locks on the rear, when engaged, operate as I am accustomed.
The 2000 Celica I traded in for the Highlander would lock the doors when I turned the ignition and unlock them when I turned it off. I was disappointed that the Highlander doesn't do the same thing.
Hi everyone. I am new here and my wife and I are proud owners of a new 2005 2WD V6 Highlander in the Fairfax, VA area.
I was told by the dealership that our cars can be programed, for free, at the dealership so that when you start driving, the doors will automatically lock.
I am planning on setting up a time to have this done tomorrow and will let you know what happens and what the process is. I hope this helps.
Well everyone, here is what I found out at the dealer today.
I set up an appointment to get my auto locking feature programmed on my 05 Highlander because I was told by many different people at the dealership that it is possible and you use the remote to do it.
The techs were very nice and searched all over the place even calling around. They were very helpeful.
RESULT: This feature MAY have been available on the older models, but on the 05 model it is not able to be done.
I hang my head in shame now and sadness..............
I think that the auto door lock is missing on the HL Limited with the factory installed alarm, but can be activated if you get the dealer installed alarm system on a regular HL. At least that is what I found for our 2004 HL Limited. It is strange to me that the 4runner has the auto lock feature as well as other Toyota models. It would seem that they would be consistent over most models.
I'm getting my keyFOB programmed at the dealer tonight for my '01. I'll mention this to them and see if they can program the autolock for me. I'll let you guys know what they say.
