Thank you for your post. It took me all of two minutes to take off the center knob and tighten the nut- It now works! Toyota wanted $700 to fix this and I'm just thrilled that it was such an easy fix!

It worked! It worked! I've never picked up a soldering iron or piece of solder in my life-- but I was even able to fix this issue without the $681 Toyota wanted to charge me for an entire AC/heater assembly.

WOOHOO! I fixed it!!!! Took about 30 minutes and was the best 30 minutes I've spent with my car in a long time!!

THANK YOU!!!!!!

Angry Re: Heater quit... sort of

Hello everyone I am interested in getting information on everybody who paid Toyota over $800.00 to get this problem fixed.

I am trying to get Toyota to recall this obvious design flaw! I am trying to gather people to make my case. This clearly is another way to rip off the customer. I MEAN $800.00 FOR A $6.00 PROBLEM THAT CAN BE FIXED in 30 MINUTES! Now that Toyota is the number 1 car company, it just shows that they have lost touch in how they got to the top in the first place. Corporate greed always rears it's ugly head and that greed will eventually cause this company to come toppling down! I have recommended Toyota to everyone and a lot of my friends and families have bought vehicles from this company over the years because of it's reliability but having the heat or cold go on and off on you by an obvious design flaw which by the way will eventually happen to your Highlander sooner or later and Toyota not recalling it for safety issues? That is ridiculous!

First let me tell you my story, I have posted here twice on this forum. Unfortunately I found this message board too late and gave my Toyota dealership the go-ahead after I was told that my original A/C panel is not fixable. After I found this site I have realized that I may have fallen for what I call "one of Toyota's scams" I quickly asked for the old part back and inspected it. Low and behold it was the same problem that everybody on this forum have and that is wires coming loose on the temperature knob. After the work was done on my wife's 2004 Highlander I inspected my old part was able to re-install my old part (following instructions on this site) in 30 minutes. It has been on for a few weeks now and it is working great! I got a hold of the Director of Service and I told him about this simple fix and how my part is not defective. I wanted a refund because this new A/C panel was totally unnecessary!

He informed me that he is aware of this site. Yes they are paying attention people and they are probably reading this site right now to see what the public is saying!

He said that Toyota doesn't recommend this fix because it might cause a fire. Let me ask you this... I looked over the new A/C control panel that they have installed and nothing has been done to correct this simple flaw. A simple dab of Loctite on the nut of the temp knob could prevent this or laying out the wires differently in the back of the knob to prevent movement will also help. I soldered the wires in a more secure way insuring less movement and a better connection so I will not have this problem again.
All they do is install another A/C panel with the same flaw and slap a warranty on it for 12 months! The wires will eventually loosen probably in 2, 3 or 4 yrs because of this damn flaw! SO YOU TAKE IT BACK AFTER THE WARRANTY AND YOU END UP PAYING OVER $800 DOLLARS AGAIN FOR THEM TO PUT ANOTHER PANEL! You will end up paying for it over and over again and IT WILL HAPPEN SOONER OR LATER. What will cause a fire is when this problem happens and the wires eventually touch and causes a short circuit. That is why this should be a recall but the dealerships are probably making so much money on this that they could care less.

Anyway, the director of service asked me if I still have the box to the new a/c panel and he would have parts call me to see if I can get a refund on it and as expected they never called. Now since the director of service was on vacation he didn't get back to me until the next week and informed me that the parts dept. would not take it back since it is electronic. So he is trying to work something out to get my refund. I totally feel that they are giving me the run-a-round.

This is why I am trying to gather people with a similar problem than mine and I am sure there are many out there! DO NOT GET RIPPED OFF BY TOYOTA! LET THEM KNOW EXACTLY HOW YOU FEEL. HELP PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING TO OTHER PEOPLE. I am loosing all hope for Toyota and looking at other brands. Help me build a case and a recall for this problem. The dealerships are all about making money and could care less and they will try to get every penny from you! I am sorry for making this so long but I have to get this out there. I guarantee you that they are reading this and know all about Tundrasolutions.com. If you would like to contact me, my e-mail is cliffycliff@hotmail.com.

Thanks for your time.

Just joined the forum and I want to thank all you that contributed expertise on how to fix the heater control on my highlander. Wires were not broken, just had to tighten the nut holding the control post.
Thanks.

This is a great forum and glad I searched for this fix before bringing it in for repair... What an easy fix ....I just re-soldered the connections, and put it all back together again...I also cranked down on the nut that secures the knob to the switch as I believe there is too much "play" when the knob is turned from cold to hot and the back and forth motion over the years wears the little brittle wire right out of the "cold" solder joint... it didnt look like the factory did a very good job with this connection at all.. anyway, it took 45 minutes from start to finish. I cannot believe this would have cost me nearly $1000!!! My symptoms were a little bit different than others because my heat was stuck on HOT and it could not be shut off no matter what....even with the fan in the OFF position I was still getting lots of heat!! fixed it right in time before summer... great site!!!

Count me in - same issue!
2002 Highlander V6 manual temperature control.
Center AC control (temperature) got "sloppy" and continued to hang on for about two months. Now I have the HOT AIR conditioning feature that Toyota seems to include in many models. I will try this fix since it sure sounds like it worked for everyone thus far and mine does do the changeover when moving the control knob. As a side note, I did find the part online for "only" $458.00.

Glad I researched this issue and found this site! I will post results.

Jim

Unfortunately that's $458 too much to pay period.

Thanx anyway.

Totally agree - I was kind of poking fun at it.
I tried it tonight hoping I could just tighten it all up but I guess it's my turn to try my hand with the soldering iron. It didn't look like any of the wires were disconnected so I just put it all back together. Now I have gone from hot to cold. It is just blowing cold - where it was just hot before.

Hey Elk2
It sounds like either he didnt solder them correctly or the wires might be touching together...make sure of these things first, also the board the switch is mounted on has the copper strands embedded in it... I believe it is the white side. make sure this is the side that gets soldered
anyway

My connections did not appear to be disconnected either .. you really need to get close up and look at it... you have to take it all apart to really see that the connections are broken.
