i don't if your crazy or not but i do know that i use the backup lights to see where i am going at times....

Default I think the basic problem (on my 04 HL) is

the tail light design, not the bulb wattage.
the BU lite is in a "hole" in the tailight and there is a side shield outboard that prevents the light from going to the side.
that blocks some of the light.
