HighlanderGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
This is a discussion thread titled "Gas Grade and Mileage??", within the Highlander forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
I am looking at trading in my '03 V6 Tundra AccessCab for the '06 Highlander with the V6 automatic and 2 wheel drive? My Tundra uses regular grade gas and is rated at 21 mph on the highway, but I regularly achieve 23.6 mpg at a speed of 65 mph with cruise control on.
My questions for Highlander owners are:
What gas grade does the Highlander use?
And have your gas mileage meet or exceed the posted ratings on the price sheet? I believe the v6 automatic 2wd is posted at 25/20 mph.
thanks in advance for any and all responses.......

Running regular I get what the sticker says. Speed makes a big difference. The difference between 55 and 75 is about 6 mpg. Premium gives a lot more power and about 1 to 2 more mpg from what I have seen.
I have 01 HL V6 AWD LTD. 18 City MPG and 22 Highway MPG was post.
Actual mileage will very with driving conditions, driving habits and vehicle's condition.
I have 15 to 21 mpg in the city and 18 to 26mpg on the highway.
My HL always in very good condition, so I know, it is how I driving.
I do not know that much about difference between 87 and 91 gas grade.
I do use 87 most of time now, because $3.09 at Santa Monica!!
I was useing 91 when gas price under $2.39.

My wife has the '05 Highlander with V6 and all wheel drive. The sticker shows 18 city/24 highway. It is designed to run on regular unleaded fuel.
We calculate the mileage for every tank. So far (~12,000 miles) using regular unleaded fuel only, we get upper 17's to mid 18's around town and 23-25 on the highway. In order to achieve these numbers we try and drive with a light foot.
considering that the RX330 uses the same engine, I've just been curious why the RX has a required fuel grade of premium while Highlander requires Regular. Wonder if there are any tuning differences between the two models.

The manual says my Highlander with the 3.3 V6 will run fine on regular but you will get increased performance with premium. You can really feel the difference.
