HighlanderGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
This is a discussion thread titled "Diff & transfer case oil grades/capacities", within the Highlander forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
I have a 2001 Highlander V6 4WD. Does anyone know if the differential gear oil grades, capacities, and torque specs noted below are correct for my truck? It's all I could dig up on the forum. Not sure if it's applicable.
>Transfer Case: GL-5 SAE 75w-90 (1.1 quarts) - Torque fill & drain plugs to 27 ft-lbs
>Front Differential: GL-5 SAE 75w-90 (1.2 quarts) - Torque fill plug to 29 ft-lbs and drain plug to 48 ft-lbs
>Rear Differential: GL-5 SAE 90 (3.7 quarts) - Torque fill & drain plugs to 39 ft-lbs
I plan to do the fluid change myself in my garage in about a week or so. Any tips would be greatly appreciated since I am only slightly mechanically inclined with limited experience. The work I've done on other cars included rotor/pad changes, oil/filter/sparkplug changes, shock/spring swaps, and control arm replacements. I have a mix of basic Craftsman and Husky tools with a Sears less than a mile from home in case more is needed.
Also, do you guys think a tranny fluid drain/fill and filter change would be too much of a workload?
Are the values correct? I need to buy the fluids and I am not sure how many liters or quarts to buy.
Why in the manual it says that for the transfer, only 1 quart is needed, and for the rear differential, only 1 quart is needed? It looks like the 2001 Highlander manual is misleading.

My O6 V6 4WD with 3.3 engine ...my X-case and Rear Diff both took 1 Qt Mobil 1 75w90, with no issue. One quart drained out each, and one quart filled up each.
Front Diff is integrated within Tranny housing and appears NON serviceable.
Anyone else on this? The subject is regarding a 3.0 V6 4WD drivetrain.

This does not sound correct. It is a 1st gen Highlander just like mine (06), and for a mid-size SUV, I don't see how the rear-diff could be so big to hold 3.7Q. Check this out in the owners' manual.
I chose to go Amsoil since it was readily available here...
Torque is close to 35 ft lbs, rear diff needs a hex socket, transfer case (no front diff) would need a 15/16" wrench and 15/16" socket.
