Yes, I'm replying to myself, but I wanted to update this. I have since determined that the bezel which surrounds the dash control unit is easily pryed up with a screwdriver. Removal of the control unit is then very straightforward. Undo the screws which hold the control unit to the mounting bracket. Then undo the bolts which hold the unit and radio in the dash. Slide the entire assembly out to access the wiring harness, unplug from the old, plug in to the new and reassemble. Total time spent was about 20 min. Hope this helps somebody.
