Default 04 HL Steering Column shaft failure?

Took car in to have a steering clunk looked at- they have ordered a "lower column shaft" whats that - a lower U joint assembly? - so maybe the Camry steering clunk is spreading to the Highlanders.
20,000 miles.

They were also going to replace the drivers side inside door panel but could not as the part they ordered (and told me was in) when they took it out of the box had a cut in it.
How is that prevented? Should the parts people take the stuff out of the box and look at it before calling you?
