Default Octane Rating for the 06 Highlander

Can anyone confirm if 87 octane gas is ok for the Highlander.

I have read that for optimum performance 91 octane or higher is recommended.

I am looking at getting rid of my 06 Rav V6 sport.

From the owner's manual

Fuel type:
2.4 L 4- cylinder (2AZ- FE) engine: UNLEADED gasoline, Octane Rating 87
(Research Octane Number 91) or higher

3.3 L V6 (3MZ- FE) engine: UNLEADED gasoline, Octane Rating 87
(Research Octane Number 91) or higher
For improved vehicle performance, use premium unleaded gasoline with an
Octane Rating of 91 (Research Octane Number 96) or higher.

It runs fine on 87 but you will loose some power and on mine I loose about 2mpg on the highway. The computer adjusts for the lower octane.

thanks....Do you notice any difference for city driving with respect to gas mileage?

When you say the computer adjusts for the lower octane, are you referring to the knock sensor?

It helps some in the city. My guess it adjust the timing and mixture.

Over the weekend I used 87 octane in my '01 highlander(6cyl-AWD). Mostly highway driving i got 24mpg. I usually average 20mph mixed high./city).

I have had a lot of issues:

1)window rattle when not fully open or closed

2)faint knocking sound on opposite side of uturns, more abrupt turns or full circle turns...becase of this, strut tower assembly replaced
right strut & bearings replaced
All did not rectify problem.
now, backorder for left strut & bearings
backorder for rack & pinion

3) fuel pump went also on backorder

4) not very comfortable ride on the v6 sport.

I am looking for a more comfortable vehicle that is quiet & proven itself over the years.

We'd be interested to hear your comments on the 06 Highlander. I really like mine and zero problems so far. Like it so much thinking about adding satellite radio from http://www.factoryinteractive.com/
