HighlanderGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
This is a discussion thread titled "2001 highlander cabin air filter?", within the Highlander forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
I opened up mine but found no cabin filter in there? I heard that some do come with one and some don't, although it has a space for it.
I read that there is a plastic bracket/cartridge that holds the filter. I am thinking of retrofitting the filter from Toyota because I do not have the plastic bracket/cartridge to hold it on to. Has anyone done this by just plugging the raw filter in without any cartridge? Or, has anyone improvised for this application?

My 2001 Highlander did not have a cabin filter either. There was a cut-out in the ventilation duct behind the glove compartment where a filter would fit, had one been installed. I ordered a holder and filter for a 2002 Highlander and slipped them in place, just like original equipment. I think my total investment was less than fifty dollars.

Would you happen to know the part number of the holder/bracket and where to get it? The last time I checked with the dealership is that they don't carry it anymore.

Yes it does. It's behind the glove box. I'm trying to figureout how to get to it. I saw on another thread that the glove box can be open further if you remove the stops on the side. I haven't tried this yet, but it said you can remove them be turning them a 1/4 turn.
The parts ARE available. And if yu go to a REAL Toyota Dealer ( with a parts dept. that is NOT lazy) they will ablige yu and order it. I know many parts reps. that are just NOT motivated. It is a bad reflection of the whole dealership in my opinion. Your objective is worth it and the cabin filter is a nice feature. I would be doing it too if I did not have it .Don't take nofor an answer! Go to other dealers!!
Parts Reps 99% of the time have ZERO automotive "applied knowledge" They just know what pictures of parts look like if they are lucky. Honestly. they are not Parts Gods, although they would make yu think so. But then again, it is a low paying job. Always has been. Before I became a Toy. tech, I worked in parts at a Toy dealer in my early 20's. I found it very boring and in 6 months I was asked to to go to Tech School. That's what started me off. But I was holding wrenches/using sockets with my Dad when I was 12. True of most dealerships.
I have successfully installed the cabin air filter and the breeze out of the vents smell different, as if it is a breath of fresh air....well worth it. I cleaned out the surrounding areas and you don't want to hear how black and how filthy the dust is. At least having the filter now, I'm confident that the air I breathe will be better than before.

My HL01 does not have the cabin filter. Where do you get the filter housing from? Would you have the part number and how much it cost you?
Thanks
IS this another trick question???
Lets see here, Toyota vehicle means go to Toyota Dealer and ask Toyota Dealer Parts Dept. for these answers which will be READILY AVAILABLE.
They will tell yu PRICE AND part NUMBER. This is not secret info...
This is not a trick answer.

I have a 2001 Highlander Limited V6 4WD. I had to have the windshield replaced years ago due to rock damage on the highway. I could tell they did not seal the windshield properly, but after 3 return visits, they said there was nothing else they could do. Recently, as I was leaving work, I noticed my windshield was full on condensation - on the inside. Two days later, the windshield cracked from the bottom up. I went back to the place that put it in, threw a hissy fit, and they agreed to replace it for free. It is fixed and I have not seen any more leaks. Now my truck reeks of mildew smell. It sticks to my clothes, my laptop bag, any and everything that sits in the car for more than 5 minutes.
I am going to clean the carpets and replace the cabin filter. Do you think this will do the trick? Any other suggestions? Please, I can't take the funky smell any longer!!
I doubt chaning the cabin air filter will change the smell very much. From experience it does not really do anything to smell other than make the air flow better through the vents if the filter is nearly clogged.
Some might think differently but shampooing the carpets and using a good mildew cleaner will take care of 99% of the mildew smell.
I recomend a "mean green" spray product. I use it on my boat and it kills all mildew or dampness buildups.
