HighlanderGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
This is a discussion thread titled "Will a dealer install parts bought elsewhere?", within the Highlander forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Obviously the parts are cheaper online. I found the running boards for 300, the rear spoiler for 220 and the bug guard for 80. Anyone done this?
Some of the will, but none of them like to. They make alot more money if you buy the parts from them, and they might charge you additional labor for bringing your own parts.

Do you bring your own food to a restaurant for them to cook?

Not a bad idea. I'd do anything to save a few bucks. Although I doubt the chef would agree. Maybe I'll go to a bodyshop instead. It'll probably be cheaper than a dealer anyway.
Why don't you install them yourself? I know both the bug shield and the running boards should be fairly easy. The spoiler might be a little more difficult, but then again, it also might be a bolt on. That would be the biggest savings by far. It's the labor that kills you.

You shouldn't say NONE as an absolute.
My dealer will install (aftermarket or factory)parts you bring in. I did an RCD lift a few weeks ago.
The labor is usually the same whether you buy OUR part or bring in your own.
Example: IF the factory running boards are BOLT ON, = x amount of labor
If the aftermarket running boards have to have holes drilled for mounting then it will probably cost a bit extra = x+y amount of labor. But if they bolt on too, the labor will be the same.
It usually depends on the dealership and management.

Since the dealer is making a substantial profit from the hourly labor rate that they charge, I believe that many if not most Toyota dealerships would comply.
It can't hurt to try. The Running boards I feel are somwhat time consuming if yu don't have a lift. But not hard to do. Drilling IS required per directions.
When yu buy parts from a dealer. They don't question who will install it.
When yu go to get service from the Service dept. They generally won't question where yu got the parts, IF They ARE Toyota parts or Accessories.
I would not be bashfull. Ask. But yu did get a great deal on the running boards. $300??? with your correct color code?? where may I ask?
The Rear spoiler can be tricky to do it neat. The instructions indicate drilling using a separate "Template Installation Kit". I read it and rquires obvious drilling and even using a "Pop Rivet".
