when i drive at low speeds and hit small bumps there is a distinct rattling noise from the front end ..anyone have any ideas what could be loose down there..Car seems to operate fine otherwise. Have had the noise for a few years now

Check the end links, they could be loose (or even broken).

Hi,

My 03 Highlander had a rattling sound from the front right side. Turned-out it was a loose brake pad. A local mechanic installed some kind of clip to fix it. No more rattling since.

Check if it still rattles when you apply the brakes...

Thanks but the rattling it is on the front as if there was some kind of bar that extends across the front end. Is there such a bar?

Yes, there is a bar. It is called a SWAY bar...

And if that SWAY bar is what's rattling. DO repair it asap before yu do any more damage.

Why do yu ask if SOME TYPE OF Bar exists? Is there more to this trick question?

Generally, a sway bar doesn't come loose, unless it was hit hard or abused in some way. Or if a mechanic did some front end work, i.e. replaced struts etc., and he didn't replace/reinstall parts correctly or at all.

Front end rattles can be caused by numerous things. Why do yu focus on a bar or something like that?

We had to have the front struts replaced on our 2003 highlander just past warranty. There was a distinct clunking sound from the drivers side front end only when hitting a depression in the road.

I think the brake unit has some clips. they might even be called rattle clips. if they fall off, the brake unit rattles.

By design, the clips just don't fall off.
But the pad shims may be missing due to a bad/incompetent brake job. Seen this hundreds of times... literally.

Remember, if yu get a rattle when yu ride the brake pedal...then the problem is not the brakes rattling.
