HighlanderGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
This is a discussion thread titled "Anyone upgrade their speakers and stereo?", within the Highlander forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
I have been wanting to upgrade my speakers in the 05 Highlander along with the stereo and was curious to know what you all have done?
Also, has anyone put a sub in? If so tell me what you have please. I would want something that doe snot take up much room and give me some nice deep base that sounds good. Not looking to have base that everyone for miles can hear, just somethign to add goo bass sound to the music inside the SUV.
Swapped the deck out for an MP3 capable one. Had that one for a year until I changed it out for one that will control my iPod. As far as the dash kit goes, they ended up using one for an Echo.
I replaced the HU with a Panasonic CQ-C5401U, speakers with Polk Audio DB650 coaxials, and added a Kenwood KFC-SW1 powered subwooder under the driver seat. It's a great improvement over the base system. The 18 watts per channel Pansonic HU is pleanty of power for me and the 150 watt subwoofer puts outs more than enought bass.
I had the JBL system in mine, but I added a Infiniti Bass Link T. Really nice, but the high end of the HZ spectrum is almost non-existent. Good for reall deep bass.
I also just had the head unit replaced with a Pioneer Nav unit. Too bad there is a slight hiss feedback through the speakers now. Luckily the guys I go to are really good. They're not happy with how it sounds either (though it's barely there) so they're going to research the problem and fix it for me.

hey kcidmil, how did you mount the basslink t? how were you able to hook up the basslink to the stock amp? i've been looking into the basslink but have not found adequate answers to convince me to purchase it.
To be honest, if you want something that will play good all around bass, don't get the Basslink T. It hits the deep bass really well (shack your neighbor's mirrors well), but lacks in the upper range.
Anyway, here's a picture of it. Mobile FX did the install for me, but luckily I get to walk back and help them anytime I want. For mounting, they set it in this position and marked 2 of the top mounting holes. Released the seat and leaned it a little bit forward. Mounted the assembly with 2 screws, then pushed the seats backed so the latched in. The pressure from the seats leaning back again helps keep it from sliding or vibrating around.
For the hook up, they tried using RCA with an adaptor, but it sounded distorted. So they used the HI level input from the speakers themselves. We had only one issue with it that way (using the stock radio). While listening to the radio (FM), if the station sent a signal for a bass hit, the subwoofer would backfeed the power through to the other speakers, causing them to distort. BUT, it never did that while we listened to CDs.
I love how it sits and looks. Gives me plenty of room for groceries and everything.

All I did was read about how to do it and research the whole process. Its actually very easy just have to be patient and trust yourself... The hard part about those was figuring out how I was going to make the frame because no one has put speakers where those storage bins were so thats what took the longest. Other than that its lots of weekends and nights and eventually a buttload of wet sanding.
That is a very nice setup... any problems with noise cancellelation though? Or do you just play stuff with really deep bass?
BTW... that's a decent size setup to run. A little powerful for the average listener. But for those with no kids to haul around.
This is the setup I used to run in my 02 Frontier. Of course at this point I had traded in my Frontier and had pulled it out. 4 Memphis M-Class 12"s wired for 1ohm, run by a MCD500 550watts @ 1ohm. What's funny is the amp wasn't rated to run at 1ohm, but it did just fine for over a year, and even in 2 SPL competitions. The box was designed for the Memhis MCD1000, which has 1100watts @ 1ohm.

No problems with cancellation. I have good crossovers built into the system. Best sounding Highlander out there... looks badass at night. I have full LED setup interior and out, in the grill, under car, in the rear lights, around the amps, under the seats etc. Ill post a pic as soon as I find one.
