HighlanderGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.
This is a discussion thread titled "screwy nav system", within the Highlander forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
My nav system on our 06 Highlander sometimes gives completely wacko instructions. Most of the time the unit functions well. Monday. I had a left turn comming up in 2 miles when the unit instructed me to turn NOW! I got the double dong and would have ended up in some guy's driveway. Tuesday, I was traaveling east on the PA turnpike-destination Flemmington, NJ. My system instructed me to exit at I 70 south toward D.C. I am familiar with GPS systems. I use a Garmin and a Magellan for wilderness hikes. Anybody have similar problems with their nav system? Stoney

I have a sony unit which the odd time will send me in the opposite direct that I know is either wrong or taking me the long way home. For the most part the unit performs flawless.
I drove from NYC to DC. destination was in the POI ( Days Inn , the whole 3 hour trip was ok till I got about 10 minutes remained for the trip.
This OE Nav kept putting me at the Pentagon front Guard House. Did this three times as I really don't know the area. I circled and circled the Pentagon perimeter. Needless to say I was finally stopped and questioned for 15 minutes by Military Police. I appeared t be driving abnormally to them. I agreed in embarrassment.
They really didn't believe me about the Nav error.
Just recently, I heard that there are blacked out areas of GPS transponders around certain military areas for US security. A possible explanation. But this doesn't explain why "Dead Reckoning" did not take over with this nav. My Hotel was less than a mile away from the Pentagon.
