Question Steering Stiff at Mid-point Only

Hi, I have a 2006 4 cylinder AWD Highlander with what I think is a problem, but my dealer and Toyota disagree and say what I'm feeling is normal.

My vehicle's steering is stiff only when the wheel is in the mid position and you attempt to turn it slightly left or right, as you would to keep it in a straight line. Once you turn the wheel slightly, it becomes easy to continue turning it.

This problem is very noticeable when driving straight on the highway - it becomes tiring after a while and also makes it difficult to make minor steering corrections.

Has anyone had this problem and/or know what causes it? I'd appreciate any input you can provide, before I head back to the dealer.

Thanks........HL4CYL2006AWD

I'm pretty sure what you are experiencing is called "Speed Sensitive Steering". The faster you go the harder it is to turn the wheel. It is designed to give the driver more road feel at higher speeds so a small amount of effort doesn't spin the wheel half a turn and you end up on your roof in a gully. When you are going slower or trying to park, the power boost from the power steering pump is increased making it easier to turn the wheel.
