In July I will get to do some vacation highway driving and will update after that again.

mythbusters debunked the myth about A/C versus windows down. Windows down proved worse gas mileage IIRC. Not that its the point of my post but just putting it parallel ..... I find it extremely hard to believe that going from recirc versus outside is going to make any difference in your gas mileage. Not saying you're wrong . Just saying I think driving habits makes more of a difference than anything, octane rating included.

My 3.0L HL (2WD) w/ 43k on the clock averages 23 MPG (highway) running 89 regular. My driving habits are leaving stop signs and intersection normal (no lead foot or granny driving) and I use cruise control at 70-75 mph on the highway. For a 3800+ lb SUV with a V6, that's actually not bad IMHO.

I love my HL

ah, that makes more sense now

Be sure to report back after your trip in July. I'm planning one shortly after that and would like to see how the HL stacks up on long constant commutes.

My wife's 2002 FWD Highlander consistently gets 20 -21 mpg with A/c (allergies) local and highway combined, and straight hwy at least 25 mpg
