mythbusters debunked the myth about A/C versus windows down. Windows down proved worse gas mileage IIRC. Not that its the point of my post but just putting it parallel ..... I find it extremely hard to believe that going from recirc versus outside is going to make any difference in your gas mileage. Not saying you're wrong

. Just saying I think driving habits makes more of a difference than anything, octane rating included.
My 3.0L HL (2WD) w/ 43k on the clock averages 23 MPG (highway) running 89 regular. My driving habits are leaving stop signs and intersection normal (no lead foot or granny driving) and I use cruise control at 70-75 mph on the highway. For a 3800+ lb SUV with a V6, that's actually not bad IMHO.
