Default Any rear brake problems ?

I have a 2003 Highlander. All brakes and rotors replaced at 58,000 km by dealer under warranty. Recently had to replace rear pads and rotors again at 120,000 km.
For some reason I'm smokin the pads and wrecking rotors on the rear.
Mechanic now says problem stems from parking bake not releasing.
New parking brake parts are Toyota parts at $450. No after market as yet I'm told.
Anyone else got this problem ?

dont have a problem with it but maybe you should check the routing of the brake wire... it might be getting caught and thats why its not releasing.

Brake wear and rotor use depend alot on driving style and geographical location (e.g. flat, hilly etc....). The Highlander is a heavy vehicle, therefore subject to faster brake wear. Your brakes will last longer and wear more evenly if serviced regularly (cleaned and lubricated). Rear disc brakes are more prone to problems because they get alot of road dirt and spray and because they don't get as hot as the fronts are subject to more corrosion. The Highlander uses the disc portion of the rear brakes for normal stopping and has an internal drum like brake for the parking/emergency function. Therefore the Highlander rears would require twice the maintenance as compared to a drum or disc set-up where the parking function is part of the drums or calipers.

Given there is not a lot of response to this rear barke problem; I guess it is not all that common. I suspect it is because of the conditions I drive in. Winter salt and sand and in summer some gravel roads with dust. I just have to get used to spending more money on maintenance.

I wish they had stayed with the tried and true old rear drums.

Inspect clean and lube even if the calipers ,Pads and rotors seem fine.
Once a year or every 5-6 k miles at least. Front AND Rear.
YU will see a difference. O/E Pads always!!! with the correct lubricants and anti rattle pads/clips. Clean those slider pins. check pin-boot seals for cracking. They wear out and are often overlooked.Water will penetrate and salt TOO. Then the pads never float properly and barely disengage when yu release the brakes.
