Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Ants!! AHHHHH!!!", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Got ready to go to work today, went in my car and found a very nice surprise....ANTS crawling all over the passenger seat and floor. I was able to vaccum some of them from the passenger seat, they were around the holes in the carpet that led to the frame so I ended up taking it to a car wash and had them use thier air and vaccum tools. It seems like they got most of them, and they did a pretty good job with the interior. Hopefully all the ants have been rid of, but is there anything I can put or spray that is safe for the car??

Several years ago I picked up about 30 or 40 bags of black cypress feather mulch.
Little did I know that .. "Fire Ants" .. had built nests in several of the bags of mulch.
FYI ... Fire ants .. bite like h*ll .. and love that black mulch because it holds heat in from the sun.
Anyway ... that was on a weekend and I did not have time to unload the truck until that next week.
Oh ... I forgot that I had a couple of Hershey bars in the glove box (now, melted in their wrappers).
Well .. the "Fire Ants" zeroooed in on that wrapped candy and they were everywhere in that access cab.
Had to unload the bed with gloves and spray it and I still got bitten several times.
Then removed the candy from the cab and the ants left or died from the heat in the cab. I did spray all around the cab to kill the ones that left the cab.
Can't bug spray inside the cab due to strong bug poison residue getting into vents and interior.

It was a huge mess that I will never forget.
SOS

There was a story going around that said some of the cleanup efforts in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina involved cutting up downed trees, and making them into mulch. And taking fire ants with them. The mulch was supposedly sold in Lowe's and Home Depot stores all over the country.
All a man really needs for happiness in this world is a good woman, a faithful dog, and a big-a$$ed set of tires on his truck.

I think I remember reading about someone in the same situation who took his truck to a paint shop where they put it in a painting booth and heated it up to whatever temp they use to cure the paint for about 4 hours. Apparently the little critters can't deal with the sustained high temps and they get cooked and the problem is solved.
Of course I believe everything I read... but if you get desperate, it might be worth a shot. Good luck.
I moved to Houston back in '89. First thing that happened was my then 5 year old daughter jumped out of the truck and onto a mound of fire ants. In about 15 seconds, she starts jumping up and down and screaming, "Oh my God!" We didn't know what was going on...having just moved from Omaha, we'd not seen fire ants...we finally got hold of her and brushed the ants off her legs and told her to scream, "ants!" next time. I learned to hate fire ants in the 6 years we lived in Houston, and I became very adept at killing them. The little bas****s still got me a few times, though. They are the meanest, most ill tempered little creature on God's earth. I hate 'em.
looks like we've all had unfortunate encounters with those little critters.
would it be safe to put some sort of ant trap in the car?

I've heard, but haven't tried, cinnamon or peppermint oil or black pepper as natural repellents.

We use these products in our house, and it does work.
You can use the version that is simply drops, You can leave the drops in your vehicle on a piece of cardboard - you don't have to place it directly on your carpeting or seats. This way when you use your car, you can remove the cardboard - clean and simple. All you would have to do is clean up the dead ants later.

yeah i saw that product in home depot....do you think it'd be safe if decided to put the drops on the side floor panel instead of the cardboard cause thats where i usually see them running by.

An exterminator told me that Terro is sweet so that the ants will be attacted to it. The ant(s) will find the Terro, take it home where his ant friends will clean him off, ingest the poison & die. Meanwhile more ants will back track to the Terro, find the poison, bring it home, yada yada yada....
Anyways, Terro works. I'd put it on something disposable in order to avoid a sticky mess later.

You can do that, but it may be messy. Just put it on a small piece of cardboard (Terro actually instructs that you cut up their packaging into little squares for this purpose). The ants won't consume every last drop (at least mine don't) and you simply discard the piece of cardboard with whatever remaining insecticide that is on it. Clean and simple.
