Do you think wire-wheeling, a palm sander, and a manual striping block would be too much...so long as it's roughed up in moderation? The greenie-meanie that comes with the kit is...small.
I don't care for spray-ins or roll-ons. I'm going with a Bedrug but if you insist on that rough stuff then I would go with a Line-X.

I got to watch my Line-X get installed and watched them peel a do it yourself job off another to be preped for Line-X. Gotta get the paint off and roughen up the metal it looked like to me. 123Gone I am sure will chime in here. I was amazed at how much the surface was roughened. It was interesting to watch them just pull up the DIY liner from the other guys truck. I even pulled a chunk off. Lots of lifted areas on that stuff and tears everywhere that it didn't adhere properly. My guess is that you can't over prep the surface to do a good job. Good luck, I hope it turns out as nicely as my Line-X did.
I have no problem decimating the inner-bed of a $40K truck for the improvement purpose...lol. My minds-eye tells me that the more paint and clear that is off and out of the way, the better adhesion I'm gonna get.
all you need is green SOS pads. you just have to rough the finish.... Herc is crap after being in the sun for too long.
No worries on the sun. It'll be under a tonneau 99% of the time.
I'm going with sanding block, palm sander w/ 100 grit, and a drill with wire wheel...makes for very, very quick and easy roughing up. Just wanted to make sure that I'm not over-doing it.
Oh boy, I REALLY hate to hear you're going for a DIY bedliner. Seriously, it's the "bottom of the barrel" as far as bedliners go. Even if you don't want LINE-X or another professional product, I would recommend other alternatives over a DIY bedliner. Such as, Bedrug, rubber mat, drop in.
I was looking for some info like this. Even though I've already prep'ed for the Herc, I'm going to my local Line-x dealer tomorrow. I really thought I could lay this stuff down well, but in light of the new information (and examples), I don't think it would matter. Also, it's nice to have the guaruntee on Line-x's shoulders.
Went to our local Line-x dealer today. They had it done in about 2 hours. Looks amazing. They did a great job. Thanks for the advice. Will have pics soon.
