Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Partial IS look!", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Since I won't be able to use the IS front bumper cover due to my wider rims/tires set-up. I'm opting for the IS grille and flares, and will be color-keying the top plastic trim piece on the front bumper (similar to the limited edition). Later on, I will get a pair of side-mirror covers to match that with the rest.
I have questions for those who have attempted the following:
1) IS flares - since I will be replacing the TRD flares with the IS flares, how will the IS flares go on the fenders? Will it cover the holes that'll be exposed since the removal of the TRD flares?
2) Plastic trim piece (upper) on the front bumper - would it necessitate the removal of the front bumper to remove this piece?
The existing holes will be covered with the new IS flares. As far as the trim piece goes. Yes, the bumper must be pulled off to unbolt that piece but the Tundra bumper is probably the easiest front bumper to take off. 4 14mm bolts and 2 10mm and its on the ground.
Do the IS flares bolt onto the metal or do they use 3M tapes? Will it leave gaps where water can get trapped and start rusting under the flares?

The IS flares bolt onto the underside of the wheelwells and attach with tape to the top side. I haven't thought about the possibility of rusting. Has anybody had a problem with this? Someone should post some pics showing the fit of IS flares to the fender.
Looking closely at the TRD flares on my tundra, there's a piece of rubber that runs along the contact side of the flare which acts like a sealer and keeps water from entering and getting trapped under the flares.

I thought of the same thing and I haven't heard of anyone mention that rubber piece when they list the contents of the kit... My kit's not even here yet and I'm already having second thoughts about the flares. I know the 3M tape is supposed to be good, but come on -- it's tape!! How are the flares of the IS Editions on the dealer lot attached? Can anyone with an older IS Edition comment about the durability of the 3M tape?

The TRD and Limited flares use a strip of weatherstripping between the fender and the flare. This piece is absent on the IS flares. They just attach using the bolts and tape. I am leary to but apparently this has not been a problem. Anyone out there who has made the switch that may have some input?
I'm pretty sure that those who have been swapping their flares with the IS flares wouldn't see any immediate problem, rust takes a long while, months, to develop. I'm going to see if other manufacturer such as Bushwacker use whether stripping on theirs.

I'm still waiting for my IS kit. Anyway, having fead the discussions on TS since early on, I seem to remember the issue of poor fitting weatherstripping coming up, but from an appearance standpoint. As far as I can remember, it's never been raised as a rust issue that I know of.
My TRD flares' trim fits fairly weel, but not perfect so I think it's there mainly for appearance versus sealing. Also, as far as I know, most automobiles now have double sided galvanizing on the sheet metal to minimize rusting. Since the holes for the flares are there on all the trucks, they're propably galvanized after they're made, so the chance of rust is no worse than anywhere else on the truck. Just my two cents on the topic.
So, out of curiousity, how do the IS flares look where they meet the truck body? Do they look funny without the trim?
I tried emailing Buschwacker but for some reason, I got message undeliverable. So I PM'd Tunda (aka Pakalas) who installed the Buschwacker, Extend-a-Fender flares on his Tundra.
Here's his reply:

Yea, I got rid of those bulky TRD flares for the Bushwacker Extend-a-Fender flares. It did come with the weather strip (bead looking strip) that is attached with adhesive to the flare. No mud flaps came with the flares though. Install was pretty easy but you gotta be careful taking off the TRD flares. I did put on a coat of wax before installing the Bushwackers for added protection
Looks like I can't get the IS flares and grille w/o buying a whole kit or paying an arm and a leg for the individual pieces. Oh well, maybe I'll find some on e-Bay.
Dennis-
Why don't you buy the whole kit, they are pretty cheap now, $450-$600 and then sell the bumper and you can make some of your $$ back. Probaly cheaper than buying the individual pieces.
