This is a discussion thread titled "Bed bolts & Line-x spray in Liners", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I am getting a spray in liner (Line-x) this upcoming Friday. When I called to setup an appointment I asked 2 questions. 1- Do you remove the Bed Bolts and 2- Do you remove bolts from inside the Tailgate.
His Replies:
1- From his experience with the new Tundra's, he has had trouble getting the bolts back in as they are short to start with and after the liner is sprayed it makes them even shorter. He also stated that even if he did get them back in and if the bolts became scratched they would start rusting.
On Fords he does remove them. He didn't mention Chevys. But a co-worker of mine said the bolts are underneath the bed on Chevys
2-He does remove the bolts on the tailgate.
Anyone here in the forum have any first hand experience with this???
Thanks in advance.

My linex dealer removed the bed bolts or the bolts attaching the bed to the frame. They also removed the tailgate bolts with no problems.
They did however have serious problems getting the bolts or screws that hold the bed rail system in place off to spray the truck. They worked on it for about 3 hours and had 2 screws that stripped out. They eventually ended up having to drill them out. Long story short (probably too late) if you own an 07 Tundra, they will not spray your truck unless YOU remove the screws to the bed rail system before bringing it in.

Make sure he pulls the bed bolts, access panel screws on the tailgate and the bolts that attach your tie down hooks....if you ever need to remove them you'll have a heck of a time getting them out if he sprays over them. Make sure he also masks the inside of the access opening before he sprays, others have had problems with the mechanism sticking due to overspray. Also, you may have to shave down the rubber stoppers to allow for the build up if the tailgate sticks or does not open properly (I did...about 1/8"). Finally, when you pick up your truck, make sure the bed is bolted back down tight and straight with the body.
Search for Line-X on this forum and you will find more info and pictures.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I will try PM 123GONE as suggested. I will at the very least have my installer remove one of the bed bolts to show me what he is talking about.
Bed bolts on new Tundras: We have not experienced any problems at all with the bed bolts and we have now applied LINE-X to many many new Tundras. The other dealer may have had a bad experience and now is "spooked". About the rusting, it's really not an issue. I've never seen nor ever heard of a problem with rusted bolts due to a LINE-X application on any model truck. Yes, GM trucks do not have bed bolts showing in the bed and the tie downs are welded in and are not removeable.
Tailgate access panel screws: Typically, the dealer removes the screws, covers the latch guts with paper inside the tailgate, sets the cover on something that raises it up about an inch above the tailgate, sprays the tailgate, lowers the panel onto the tailgate, and reinstalls the screws. So, if you have a latch problem, the screws and access panel are easily removeable without having to dig into the bedliner material.
Rail system screws: Well, I'll admit that the very first time on the very first new Tundra, we striped two screws using hand tools. Since then, we've figured out how to remove/reinstall them with no problems whatsoever. We use a LOW TORQUE air impact wrench. If you don't know what an "impact wrench" is (the name is a little misleading), it's like an air powered drill. I bought one a Sears for like, $20 or $30.
How about telling them to ensure they don't spray around the tailgate closing area to prevent so many issues with the tailgate not opening later?

There are two rubber stops on the truck and the tailgate closes against those stops. If the bedliner is too thick on the a opposing tailgate areas and/or if the stops are raised due to LINE-X being applied underneath them, it's possible that the tailgate won't close all the way. Some dealer fixes include trimming the stops, not spraying LINE-X on the opposing tailgate areas, not spraying underneath the stops. At my shop about 1/2 of the stop has LINE-X underneath it, we do not trim the stop, and we are careful to not spray the opposing area too thick. Also, when reinstalling the tailgate latch hoops, they need to be pressed away from the truck before tightening the bolts.
I had Line-X sprayed in July 2007 and two of my bed bolts just recently started to rust. The bolts that secure the cargo tie downs (near the tailgate) are rusting too. I am not sure if the rust problem is related to the sprayed liner. Anybody else having this problem?
