This is a discussion thread titled "Blacked Out", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Ok, so I have an appointment next Tues to get those fugly chrome strips on the front grille painted black.
I am also gunna have them paint the side mirrors black.
...in case you cant tell, I HATE chrome.
Anyway, I was looking for other potential "blackness' and other tha the badges and the bumper, there's that thin strip along the body that needs to be black.
Now, should I have them remove that pioce and paint it? It seems that is the only way with something that small.
My '05 single cab extended bed tundra is going through the same phase. Good thing for me my truck already came with black door handles, side mirrors and grill. I then had the windows limo tinted (thanks to a friend with a local tint shop ), debadged and at the sametime sanded and painted the front chrome Toyota emblem black using Krylon Fusion paint. Up next is I'm having my stock 16"wheels painted black then pulling the chrome bumpers off, having them stripped and also painted black. I think I'll leave the taillights stock along with the headlights. I'm really considering getting clear side markers.
I hate chrome too!! All I have left to do is the bumpers, front emblem, and the strips in the bodyside moldings. I took off the emblems, mirror covers, and wheels to get the look I wanted. The bumpers are the next thing I'll get done. I'm considering LineX for the bumpers, the grill, and surrounding area.

Wish list: Line X'd front and rear bumper, rock sliders
I ordered primed mirror covers today for $25 b/c my local guy didnt want to tackle the chrome.
In my pics my last tundra, I had my fenders and mirrors Line-X and it looked great. They added some gloss to it. David(123Gone) was able to walk my Line-X guy on how to do it.
Hey guys, with regards to that thin chrome body molding, cant I just remove it, rather than painting?

Not sure, but if it's just held on with 3M tape then a heat gun and fishing wire should do the job. Follow up with goo gone and a good coat of wax. You may want to ask a body shop to see if the moldings are held on with 3M tape and do not have tabs. That would be my concern is the tabs. If you remove the molding then the tab holes are going to be exposed leaving your doors looking funny. Good luck.

The body side moulding for the tundra does have tabs so there would be holes if you removed it. What some people on here have done is replace the OEM moulding with aftermarket.
Sorry guys, I am not talking about removing the entire body molding.
On my SR5, there is the thick black strip, which is ok. Then there is the very thin chrome strip...maybe .25'' or so.
I want to remove or paint.
Youre not gunna believe this.....
So, my grille was supposed to be ready yesreday. They called at 9:00 and said to come in at 2:00. I went in and they told me there was a problem: the paint would not set up correctly...wouldnt dry.
So they gave me an extra day to restrip and try again. I just got call #2 and it appears now that it is dry BUT the paint is a DULL black, not glossy.
Ok, finally got my grille back...looks great, especially for $150.
I also peeled the thin chrome strip off of the sides.
I bought mirror covers from Carson Toyota; they are primed to be painted, and the place that paintd my grille said they will paint the covers for free.
All that is left is to buy a set of black wheels and to figure out what to do about the rear bumper...maybe Line-X.
Then it will be blacked out!!!! Oh and no, I will no be debadging, sorry for those die hard debadgers.
I used a small flat head screwdriver to get it started, then it pulled out extremely easy. I then used some Simple Green to remove what little adhesive was left on the truck. I like the look better. Now all I have is that thick black part of the molding, which is what I was looking for.
I am keeping the strips, for whatever reason.
Ok, finally got the grille painted, ordered new mirror covers from Carson and had them painted, removed the chrome strip from body molding, and got a 2'' Daystar Leveling kit.
Looks good. I'll try to get some pics of my Tundra after I wash it. After about 20k miles on my limo tint I think I may be going back to my friends shop for double limo. My stock wheels should be coming off in a few weeks and are gonna be painted black.
About the tint, no it's not legal. What I have on my truck now is not legal. Limo on all the windows and the brow is actually about 1.5" below where the legal limit should be. I've been pulled over twice this past month and did not have a problem with the police officers checking my tint. They were more interested in the reason they pulled me over. I think I'll try double limo on the rear window first to make sure I can still behind me while in reverse.
