Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "How do I remove pinstripes?", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I just bought a 2000 4X4 TRD Limited, and the truck has pinstripes. Does anyone know how to properly remove these butt-ugly things without damaging the paint?
I saw my neighbor taking a pinstpe off of his beater van a while ago with a razor blade, but i dunno about the damage.

hey bro your ride most likely has a painted pinstripe, which has to be professionally removed with a ultra fine grit sand paper and then buffed back to a high luster. If your truck has a vinyl stripe then just use a heat gun to remove it.
I'll snag a heat gun from work and peel that sucker off. It's a hideous vinyl sticker and must be gone along with the badges. Next will be the chunky yucky anti-door-ding molding along the lower doors and bed. I suppose I'll stop when all that's left is paint (that chrome grill and grill surround ain't long for this world, either).
Are there any drawbacks to removing the pinstripe on an older truck? I've got an '01 and the pinstripe has been on there for at least 2 years in the hot Texas sun. The pinstripe is actually starting to peel itself off along the edges so I might as well just remove it myself.
Would there be any difference in the color of the paint behind it? Is the hair dryer still the preferred method?

What is the best way of taking pinstriping off? Also decals? I read somewhere that using a heat gun is good for removing decals. Would it work on pinstriping also?

I did not read where you live but even so I parked my truck out in the sun for awhile and they soflen up alot, the pin stripes come off in snap pick up a edge with your finger nail and pull with even tension. the TRD decal was more work i used a hair dryer (my wifes) pistol grip style and a pastic putty knife (clean) and then 3M adhesive remover (auto zone,Walmart) then wiped down the areas with alcohol, and waxed. the sun got rid of the ghost images in a but aweek.
