This is a discussion thread titled "HID retrofits post here", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
ah I see. After reading your post eddie, i went back to HIDplanet and found a picture view from the top and seen the tape you were talking about. At first, I thought the guy just glued strips of foil or something on the back and I figured that was quite ghetto for my tastes!
I automatically assumed that once the projectors were in, then you would just bondo the thing in or use something like epoxy putty or what not.
Oh Eddie, in regards to the Q45 retro, were there any space issues behind the housings? I visited a local stereo shop that I have heard does retrofits, but one of the guys there saw my truck and said that I don't have a lot of space behind there cause the magnet portion of the projectors are what stick out the most so there would be problems with fitment depending on what projector I choose to go with. He showed me a picture of a VIP lexus GS car they did with the Q45's in them, and I mentioned that i've seen some people in the mainland do that to their tundra's. Long story short, they called me back later to say that the installer doesn't think he can do my truck watever!
I really want a nice sized projector to fit inside the headlight because since it's a big spacious housing, I don't want no small sized projector in there making my tundra look all bug eyed. That's why i've been considering the LR3 since they looked pretty big on the Land Rover's I've seen driving by.

Space issues,it's about the same as a stock headlight on the driver side. It's hard to say on the passenger side since I have a Volant airbox instead of stock, but even with halogens it was a little tight. With the ballast plug connected I'd say the rear protrudes maybe an inch or so more than stock. To cut down on the cussing,I installed the bulbs and plugged in the ballasts before installing the headlights.
Caesar used three screws or threaded rods to mount each projector, the spots of JB Weld on the housing are where the screws/rods were bolted to the housing. The projectors butt up right against the housings but it still needed to be sealed,so he used that metal tape. I didn't want anything permanent as a seal (like fiberglass) so the projectors could be removed without damage.
I might still have the headlight I was experimenting with,I'll post pics if I find it.
Acura TL projectors
BMW ZKW projectors (to swap the lens to the TL projector)
55w digital ballasts with bulbs and bi-xenon wiring harness
I was playing with the projectors last night and spacing the ZKW lens in the projector and got a nice cutoff with blue color at the cutoff as well. The clear ZKW lense is so much nicer than the standard TL lens! I can't wait to see them in the truck! Think I will start modifying my headlights this week or next.
I have thought about the Q45 "Gatling Gun" HIDs. I wonder how they would look in the new gen Tundra...I've been trying to find someone to do the retrofit around here, and have turned up no luck...

Problem with the Q45 projectors is you won't have high beams anymore.

I am re-organizing my pictures, please PM me if you find dead pictures and I'll fix it. Also, I don't have many pics in my account here, best place to view my truck is on photobucket: Here is my photobucket account: LINK
The halogen FF1000s arrived, mounted these along with the HID FF1000s and the damn things get in the way of the hood latch release I guess I'll have to run three lights instead of four...now I have to decide on all-HID or HID outer and halogen center lamps.
I'm also changing the bulbs and ballasts. I ordered a par of Philips DL50 (50-watt) bulbs, these will be powered by rare, discontinued Auerswald ballasts that can be run in 35-watt (regular HID wattage) or 50-watt output.

I just got both my OEM headlights apart and disassembled, so its time to start cutting and mounting my TL projectors. I was really amazed that I got them apart so cleanly for my first time taking headlights apart. The biggest success to doing it was having a 2" putty knife and I would put the housing in the oven for 10 min, pry at it for a few minutes, put it back in the oven and then take it out and pry somemore.
The second housing came apart a lot faster, only took 3 times in the oven and about 10 minutes of labor.
It depends on the budget. The Tundra headlights are plenty big to put any projector you want.
I went a high dollar route, since I got a nice year end bonus. I got a pair of TL bi-xenon and bought a set of BMW projectors with the ZKW lenses to swap over to the TL for the best output you can get.
i'd say you'd want to get a bi-xenon setup to retain your high beams and a projector with a clear lense is best.
i'll have to post pics of my other stuff I bought, I got a HID bulb/ballast and a wire harness from someone and its really high quality and works nice in test firing so far. If your setup doesn't have D2S bulbs, you might just want to sell all that stuff and get a kit for D2S stuff.
I have my headlights torn apart now, did most of the cutting, and just have to mount the projectors now.
I have both D2S and D2R Bulbs, and I also have BOSH BMW M3 ballast and ignighters. Just recenty I've purchased Lexus D4R Ballasts and Bulbs.
My goal is to make retro for my headlights and fog lights. Headlights I want to be bi-xenon, and fog lights i want to be 3000K HID (Golden color) w/projectors in them

If those are the Bosch ballasts I'm thinking of,they can be modified for more power output
If I were you, sell the D2R and get D2S. D2R bulbs were designed for reflector headlights, not projectors. And be aware those Lexus D4 ballasts aren't compatible with D2S bulbs and vice-versa. They will ignite briefly or not ignite at all. You'll also have to grind a notch into the D4 bulb if you plan to use them in any D2S projector. So if you can still return them,I highly suggest you do.
I have 3000K bulbs in my fogs, don't have them powered at the moment because the cheap ballasts were causing interference through the radio, once the weather is nicer I'm installing weatherproofed Denso ballasts.

Yes, sir
I have both D2S and D2R bulbs with Bosh ballasts, also I have D4R bulbs with Denso ballasts. D2X and D4X have different voltage output. Either way, I want to connect D4R 4300K into headlights, and D2S 3000K into fog lights.
Either way, I would love to convert both headlights and fog lights into projector lights (if even possible - make them both bi-xenon lights)
What do you think?
take care
gene
Edit, where do you think I can buy D2R 3000K bulbs for a good price?

The 3000K bulbs in my fogs (9006 base) are from an ebay seller named stillenmaxima98. He also offers D2x base 3000K bulbs for $75 shipped. You won't be able to find genuine Philips 3000K bulbs for that cheap, they're at least double the price.
