Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Herculiner Type Products?", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Anyone have any experience with these type of products? Which ones are good and which ones to steer clear of?
Here's my dilemma... I cut my rear quarterpanels for the new bumper and after the DV run I pulled the bumper for powdercoating. During removal I got a small dent on the bottom edge of the metal.
So, I was thinking that I could just Line-X the fender flares and blend that into the bottom edge of the rear quarters with about a 1 inch strip of black Line-X to hide the defect... until I called them ond got a price quote of about $100+ per flare! This is just not in the budget at this time.
So, I'm now considering using Herculiner or whatever brand is best to just do a nice, neat 1 inch strip along the bottom of the quarterpanels. It will hardly be noticeable with the bumper on and will not only mask that small defect but it should help protect that edge from corrosion as well.
Thoughts and opinions please!

i have hurculiner on the bed of my truck, and in less than a year it was already peeling off, and its not from a crappy install job either. I am not very happy with the product at all, but im not sure how it would hold up in an application like yours.
Ditto that. Wanting to save some bucks, I used Herculiner on my bed, as well. Mine hasn't "peeled", per se, but it has worn such that the coverage in high use areas is now spotty, at best. It really hasn't worn too badly in those areas that don't receive much "traffic", however. I can't vouch for the quality of the application as I had never done any kind of automotive painting prior to this. I did follow directions as best I could, though.
That said, your application might not turn out so badly. Other than road spray, I wouldn't think the bottom edge of the quarterpanels would see much abrasive action which might wear away the Herculiner so you could get lasting results with good prep work. A quart should do the trick so you won't be out much money.
Dunno, man. I sure wouldn't have done my bed had I known how it would turn out but for some trim work, it might be OK. It's up to you. Good luck!
I too have the herculiner and mines be flawless. I think I use my bed pretty hard and with some pretty dirty stuff. I drag heavy hard stuff into and from it, throw objects into it that worry me sometimes about denting the bed floor. Hmm, the only thing I know that it won't stand up to it a gouge from something hard and sharp, I don't think any brand will withstand that. Oh I have two coats.
The herculiner seems to be kinda soft in texture when dry so I added a second coat from a different brand(forgot the name) which dry hard.

That's a pretty high price for the LINE-X job. However, you probably didn't realize a couple of things.
1. It's best to remove the flares and totally encapsulate them. So, there's double the LINE-X volume being applied than you probably thought.
2. The factory flare "clips" are for one time use. So, the dealer is going to have to buy new ones when he reinstalls the flares. A set cost about $50 or so.
