Default My sound deadening project

Well I started sound deadening last night. Wow, it's a big job, but it should make a huge difference. Anyways, since I am helping a friend move this weekend, I didn't totally gut the truck. All I did was the back wall and window access panel. I have seen some people just deaden right over the window access panel, but was hesitant to do it that way, just in case anything ever went wrong.

The materials I am using are raamat and esolite, with the raamat spray glue. That glue is better than anything I've ever used, there are no spray particles that go in the air, it's a steady stream of glue onto the surface.

Here are some pictures! The back window access panel was good practice. Inside the window cavity (no pictures yet) was a HUGE pain! I put about 2 layers of raamat on the acces panel with ensolite on the front and back. Only two layers on some of the less reinforced parts on the access panel.

What it looks like from Toyota. Two little pieces of sound deadening.

Started sound deadening access panel

Finished the raamat on the access panel.

Inside window compartment from Toyota, no sound deadening.

Next on to the passenger door. I did the passenger door first because I was installing an automatic lock module at the same time. It locks the doors when speed is at about 15 mph and unlocks when the ignition is turned off.

Removed discarded the factory moisture barrier. Put about 2-3 layers on the outside door skin, with an extra layer behind the speaker. The third layer was only in the center of the door where there was the least support. I also put a small square of ensolite behind the speaker. On the interior door skin I put about 2 layers, and covered the holes in the door too. I did not need any sheet metal or filler, the raamat was sturdy enough to cover the holes. They I put a layer of ensolite over the raamat.

All cleaned up and ready for sound deadening.

Closer look inside the holes.

Done with the raamat

Here are some pictures of the floor. I went for a drive afterwards, I need to do the rest of the doors. It sounds like I have a window open behind me without them done. Other than that, like others have said, engine noise is more noticeable. I may eventually do the firewall (inside, not in the engine bay). The problem I ran into was that Toyota put a huge foam pad that covers the entire firewall, so in order to raamat behind it, I would need to remove the entire dash to remove the pad.

Everything fit back together fine except the seat mount covers won't snap on (may be able to rotozip them so they will).

Finished raamat, started ensolite

Well I guess now I'm gonna have to do a more detailed post on the process, hahahah. Thanks for adding me though! I didn't get any pictures of the roof, but it's really easy to do once the headliner is removed.

I'll see if I can do a short how-to on the automatic door locks as well, they're really great to have.

More pictures and details to come soon. I am waiting on another shipment of raamat that should arrive Wednesday.

Dibble,

How is the smell with the RAAmat? I bought some with the foam and it smells in the package. A little shy to put it on if it will smell. With the work that you have already done, does it still smell?

Maybe a bit of a smell at first. I was out with friends and they didn't notice anything, they even went as far as, "it smells good in here". Anyways, for the most part, no smell at all. The only thing that smells is the spray glue, and that goes away in one to two days if you leave your windows cracked, and drive around with all the windows down for the first minute or so while driving. Down to the point, no smell after two or three days.

I just got my second shipment of raamat, so thats going to be my weekend project, finishing the doors.

I hear a big difference. The main noises I hear are the tire and engine noise. I have revo's and they get louder as they get older. I was driving the other day in heavy rain and its amazing, the only rain noise is from the windshield.

So pretty much you eliminate the outside noise coming in except for the engine and tire noise that's even louder?

Yea, outside noise is a lot quieter. You can still hear the "woosh" of cars going past if you're at a light. The engine and tire noise is not louder, just a bit more noticeable, but that could be attributed to the brand and type of tires I have installed.
