This is a discussion thread titled ""nerf" bars - we'd like to hear your opinions", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
i got the 3-step waags. i like how they pretty much cover wheel to wheel, but am dissatisfied in the fact that the step plates started fading about 8 months after installation. see my photos for a shot of the fading....
price...don't know. they were installed at the dealer at time of pick up. but looking at them, they look to be a simple & straight forward bolt-on.

I have the Westin Nerf Bars and have been extremely pleased with their product. I had them when I first got my Tundra and they look as good as the day I got them. As far as price, I do not recall. Installation was a simple bolt on.

I also have the Waag Wheel to Wheel bars. Have had no problems with them (other than the fact that I've been too lazy to duck under there and retorque the bolts like I should) :b
Install was very easy, and all of the components came fine with the kit. Took me 45 minutes for one side, being extremely cautious and re-re-re-reading the instructions. And about 15 minutes for the other side since I was comfortable with it.
The fit and finish are good on mine, and they hold up to my not-insubstantial-weight easily.
I have the manik step bars in stainless steel really like the way they look. They were very simple to install, and the brackets have appr. 1" of adjustment in and out as well as up and down. The total install was less than 45 min. Both the ends curve in at about the last 5" which makes for a really nice installed look. Also the mounts are not at the end like most they are about a foot from the end of the tubes. I think this makes for a better mount that is much more secure with the mount closer to where you will be stepping. The price was only $319.00 mail order, just did a search on yahoo untill I found a good price from a company that was reliable. Don
Got the Toyota nerf's, since they were the same price as most aftermarket ones(~$320). Install was pretty easy, liked the fact that they had additional support in the center(some only hold on each end, but these secure in 3 places). Some here say they can adjust their's in/out, this would be useful as the Toyota ones don't adjust and are a bit too close to the truck body. Also, I find that they do wiggle a little bit under weight, even though they are tightened down. I attribute this to the fact that the bolts that hold them on really aren't that beefy, I wish they were larger. Overall though, I am very happy with them and like the look of the top rubber piece running the full length of the bar instead of just the 2 steps on most aftermarket ones. /Mike

Got the Bully's in stainless here from Performance.... $290 to my door, arrived Christmas Eve. Installation took about 30 minutes.
Four bolts, 60ft/lbs, done.
Hardest thing was getting the stud into the frame box for the front mount. My arms are very long and thin and I barely made it... I think my entire forearm was in the frame box reaching from the tranny crossmember.
EDIT: Oops... Truckexpressions, same as Fly above. Not Performance.

I got the new Westin "oval"straight bars.I modified the brackets so the bars would be a little higher and closer to the body to keep them from making the truck look lower.Have been very impressed with them. They flex a little when you step on them because of being made out of aluminum, but they sure do keep down on the dirt and rocks from hitting the side of the truck .
I have the Westin nerf bars. IMHO they feel a bit "weak" when I step on them it kinda sounds like they are going to bend or snap off the frame. As for keeping rocks of the side of my truck.....no disappointments here.
I have a pair of Bully nerfs from here. I am very happy with them. I feel like 304 stainless is the only way to go as they will not chip or flake. They are just as easy to install as the rest of them.
I have the SmittyBuilt in black and am very pleased with them. Got them at a discount through a performance warehouse here in Atl. Install wasn't too hard though needed a second hand in a couple of places. Fit at the front caused some interference with the mudflaps but no big deal. Good quality material and hardware. Am happy with them.

Groundpounder,
Could you post a picture with the new bars?
Thanks!

I got the Luverne polished stainless bars about a month ago off of ebay for about $290, which was about $130 less than a local dealer. The installation kit must have fallen out during shipping because it wasn't in the box. I called Luverne and spoke to one of their engineers who emailed the instructions and told me what size bolts I needed from Home Depot. I swung over to Home Depot and picked up 4 bolts, 8 washers and 8 nuts for about $5. Install was a breeze. I got my girlfriend to hold them for me while I bolted them up. I am very happy with them and would recommend them to anyone.
I got the Smittybilt bars. I'm very pleased with them. It does somewhat interfere with the front integrated mudflap on the TRD wheel mouldings. It's not a big deal at all, you can't even see it once it's installed.
Smittybilts are pretty much bolt in. Though they did call for drilling on one of the mounts. I didn't bother drilling and putting that bolt in and the install is still solid. To be sure, I had a heavy set co-worker give them several good jounces. They were rock solid.
