Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled ""nerf" bars - we'd like to hear your opinions", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I installed the Westin "wheel to wheel" nerf bars on my '02 Ltd. Easy to install, and the price was right. I especially like the step at the back so I can step up to get something out of the tool box or the bed.
I installed Westin on my '02 SR5 4x4. I don't remember what I paid but they were under $250. It took me about 15 min each to install and I have had no issues with them thus far.

I have a pair of black , I believe, TubeTech Nerf bars. They are mounted by bolting on to the two body mounts on each side of the truck. Last week my buddy was getting in on the passenger side and a bolt broke in half and the nerf bar fell. I had to buy a new Toyota body bolt and it still sags a little bit. It wount get nearly as tight as the other side. Anybody have different mounting ones or had any problems like this ???
I also bought the ICI stainless nerfs. I had black nerfs on my taco and the paint chipped off from rocks and debri kicked up from the road by the tires. They then began to rust. The stainless nerfs won't chip or rust and can be buffed out with jewlers buffing compound to a good as new finish if they ever get scratched. They came with two built in steps (not cut outs). I think you get what you pay for.

Clay
The Waags I have mount to the frame, not to the body. I'm no lightweight and they hold my weight very well.

I am getting the Smitty ones installed now, and the guy installing tells me he has to trim off the bottom of the mud gaurd on the front. Has anyone had this problem. I am in a bit of a rush, and can't wait to go and look myself, but supposedly I would not even notice the cut according to the guy? Could it possibly be wrong bars??
No problems at all installing. Just leave out the inboard screws on the mudflaps. Also, I did not drill and install the small bolt as per instructions (others haven't either). Your option.
(The bars will rest against the mudflaps, but that's OK.)
I put a set of black ones on a 4 Runner and another set on my Taco. Both set's were painted and clear coated to match the vehicles finish. It definitely set's them apart from just the black. The black powder coat dulls out over time and looks like crap. However, I'm done with steel. For whatever reason, they started rusting from the inside out. The first hint was the paint starting to bubble. This process took about 4 - 5 years on both. If you want to prevent chipping, take them in and have bed liner put on the bottom half of the tubes. If you want something different on top, add some of those Carr aluminum nerf bar steps. The next set for my Tundra will be fiberglass or plastic.
I looked at the website breifly it looks like that you have to buy the double step bar. I would contact the place first by email and let them know your interested. If you are local you try ordering over the phone just to make sure you don't get delivered wrong ones.
In another website AZtruck.com they are running a 10% discount on purchases over 250 i think or atleast a 5% discount for fathers day.
I bought mine from there good quality bars ok price
