Considering getting running boards or nerf bars for my 2002 access cab. My wife and daughter are 5'3" and 5'2" respectively, and have to really climb to get in to the truck. I like the look of the OEM running boards, but wonder how substantial they are.
It basically comes down to preference. I've looked at a tundra with running boards at my local toyota dealer and they are pretty sturdy, they would definitely be stable. I on the other hand have Westin nerf bars on my truck because I prefer the more "rugged" offroad look. running boards are a nice look though if your going for the more "street truck" look. It's up to you but both are going to be sturdy enough for you.
I have 3" stainless steel nerfs. Love 'em. My brother has running boards, and over the last 2 years they have started to sag from him and his family stepping on them. Shouldn't happen with the nerfs. Plus, nerfs look beefy while running boards are more sleek and sporty, methinks. So it may depend on what look you want.
Just a matter of taste and looks you want. The nerfs are certainly cheaper and very functional. I have both (currently using nerf bars while the boards sit in a box). The only downside to the running boards is potential scratches with frequent use depending on how folks get inside.

The mod list is long. Check some pics in my gallery for mod detail.
Went with the Toyota chrome tube steps ~ $385 out the door from my local dealer. Painless installation with no drilling - uses existing attachment points. Seem solid enough.
I have a 2000 Access Cab and I added the "factory" running boards. I have rented vehicles with the "tubular" steps and I'll take the running boards any day. Why? The running boards are also mud guards, and so the mud loads up on the bottom, but the tubular steps load up with mud on the top. The tubular steps might be cheaper, but if you live where there's mud, as I do, they are a waste of money.
