Default I Need a New Paint Job for my 2000 Tundra!!!

Aloha Everyone,

I am in need of a new paint job for my truck. There are a lot of chips in the paint due to rocks and a major scratch on top of the hood. Also there is rust forming on top of the roof. My truck is about 4 years old, and I want the truck to last a very long time. I live near the ocean, being from Hawaii it is hard not to be far from the ocean, so the salt air really does some damege to the paint of my truck. I was just wondering if anyone out there painted their tundra! What should I look for in an Auto Body & Paint shop? What should I expect to pay for a really good job? Any help on this matter would greatly be appreciated.

Mahalo Nui Loa!!!

Paint jobs are almost a function of how much money you have in your pocket. A basic paint job from a chain shop could be as little as $500. In my opinion, a real bad job. Really good paint jobs are in the 2 to 3 grand range. Trim and such is fully tapped and/or removed. The entire car is sanded, with small dings and chips filled. It is reprimed and sanded several times again. Several coats of a quality top-coat are applied. The pros have a "seasoning" room that cures the paint. I would go with the same color but with several coats and no clear-coat. Note that a good job is really time intensive! Good luck!!!

You'll here things both ways, but clear coat is really another coat of paint that is "clear" - no pigment. I'm old school and like all the coats of paint to have color - really helps in the scratch department as the pigment is deeper. All new cars come with it as it keeps shine better (harder to see light scratches) and is cheaper to apply.

808...i saw an earl sheib in oahu a couple of weeks ago. from my friends experience i'd stay away from those "cheap" specials at those chains because you will get what you pay for. if you know of a reputable body shop (even a custom shop) it would be best to check them out. expensive, but when it comes to paint i'd pay the price. i've seen too many bad paint jobs at car shows.

Stay away from Maaco too,"uh oh" is right.

I'd visit a luxury car dealership like Lexus and see who they send their cars to. The bodyshop we deal with does great work.

Visit some car shows too,ask the owners who painted their cars.

Here's a link I dug up after I found out how crappy the
paint was on my Tundra.

"How to choose a good repainting and body shop"
http://www.allpar.com/eek/body.html

Love the truck, hate the paint.
