I bought a set of used TRD flares not realizing there needed to be holes in the sides of the fenders to mount them. I have a base Tundra Access Cab that had no flares at all and I stupidly thought that the flares only mounted from from the inner/bottom edge of the fender.
Has anyone ever attempted to cut square holes in side the fenders to mount these flares?
Boy I feel stupid. : (
I may have missed something but I have the same truck that you do and there are square holes in the fender opening lip in about 3 places (I would check but it is in the shop right now)
I think all of the flares available mount to these holes.

Thanks for the reply Chuck. That's what I thought when I bought the flares. Trucks with TRD flares actually have square holes cut in the side of the fenders about 2 inches from the lip. I sure would like to mount these flares, but I'm pretty leary (sp?) of attempting to cut holes in the fender.
Check with your dealer they might know some trick, or just go to the lot and check out a trd equipped truck.

I mounted TRD Flares to my truck as well and didn't bother with cutting the holes. The flares will mount on just fine with the bolts inside the wheel well. They fit quite flush and i havent had a problem for the 2 years i've had them on.
you might want to slap some epoxy mix adhesive as well as the 3m tape that came with it. It softens up but keeps a tight grip. Just so you dont leave a flare out on the freeway one day. I had SR5 flares and replaced them with IS flares
Since you bought the flares used you'll need to get some 3M two sided tape. If you're a full member, you can go to the instructions on how to install the Ivan Stewart body kit. Information on this tape is in there. I would think that a combination of the tape and the fasteners along the wheel well lip would hold the flares, though it is interesting that Toyota saw fit to punch the square holes. They must feel the extra security is worth the extra cost.

Just get some small self tapping sheet metal screws. Have someone hold the flare in place and set the screw in place. Plastic washers are beneficial. I've had Bushwacker flares on four different vehicles in recent years and have never had a problem with rusting. In fact, I think that was about the only way they mounted their flares for years. If you think rust protection is necessary, apply some Aqua Seal or other urethane adhesive to each screw before you set them. Double sided tape ain't the answer if you'll be doing any off roading. Eventually you'll hang a flare on some sage brush or a tree limb and the flare won't be there when you get home.
