Let's talk about air systems. Has anyone installed both the tanks an compressors under the truck? And if so, where did you install the incoming air filter? I want to install the up high so the don't run the risk of inhaling water.
And how did you attach the tanks and compressors? Did you fashion your own mounting brackets, or what?

I basically mirrored the install that Herbicidal did. I mounted a 2.5 gallon tank behind the rear bumper and bolted the compressor to the hitch frame under the left rear quarter panel. The compressor is sealed, so it's weather resistant. There's an extended hose for the air intake that's mounted up above the air tank. I have a few pics in the public gallery of it. My spare is a 285/75/16 and the 2.5 gallon tank has almost exactly enough space behind the bumper to fit without impeding the spare being dropped. If I were to get a different compressor, I'd spend a little extra to get the 100% duty cycle. I got the 33% duty cycle VIAIR 400C which works great, but with 285's airing back up from 15 lbs, it takes a while. The tank definitely helps though.

I have Dual Viair 450C compressors ready to be installed, and a pair of 2.5 gallon tanks on the way. Air horns are already installed but not hooked up. Evenually, I am going to bag the rear end to help with heavy loads.
Where did you run your extention hoses to and where did you mount the intakes?

The intake is up above the air tank, so unless the rear gets submerged while it's running, it never gets any debris near it. If I had 2 tanks, I'd probably opt to bolt them in the bed, although I've seen some larger Ford Super Duty builds that were able to jam them up under the truck, mounted directly to the frame.
I ran one long hose from the back to the dash where the gauge is. The rest of the hoses are just woven around the tank area behind the bumper. For the fitting that I attach the tools to, I ziptie'd that hose to the hitch, up under the bumper, so it's more or less out of the way.

I like where you mounted your air gauge, but unfortunately, that is where my XM Roady satellite radio unit is mounted.

I have to shoot a little WD40 in the fitting every 6 months to keep the little ball bearings moving, but it really doesn't fill up with road debris at all. Since you have a 2001 also, I think that plastic cover that sits on the transmission hump, just below the ash tray might be a good candidate for the gauge and switch. Other than that, I don't think we have many flat spots on the dash. There's that angled area to the left of the steering wheel, but you might need to fabricate an angled bracket so it would sit more at a 90 degree angle.

If I'm looking at your pictures correctly, you mounted the tank with U-bolts to your trailer hitch frame, correct?
That I did. The small 2.5 gallon tank fits perfectly back there and there's about a nat's hair worth of space between the 285/75/16 spare in front of it, but it doesn't get in the way of dropping the spare.

That's true, mine is square. Maybe you can use something like those square brackets with a v-shape and teeth on them (can't remember the name) that come with sway bars so it digs into the round axle.
