Default Respraying over Previous Line-X or Rhino install?

hi,
I thought about sending 123Gone a private message, but thought his answer or someone else's might be of use to others.

My question: What is the recommended procedure, if there is one, for respraying or spraying over a previous version of a Line-X or Rhino install?

Are there any special surface preparations that the owner should perform?
Should a Rhino only be installed over a Rhino and Line-X over Line-X?
Is respraying a recipe for disaster down the road?

Thanks.

Definitely PM 123 Gone.

Out of curiousity, why would you want to do this? Line-X has a lifetime warranty throughout the US and I believe that Rhino is at minimum warranteed by the original installer.

I'm actually actively trying to find a reputable Line-X dealer - mostly Rhino around me. But, my friend who is the 3rd owner of a Ford diesel truck wants his liner repaired. He's not even sure of the original liner.

I am pretty sure that if it is Line-X they'll repair/replace it for free. If not I am sure that the entire bedliner would have to be removed so that the new one would adhere properly.

I thought I would go ahead and chime in.

LINE-X has a patented process (which won a SEMA award in 2008) called ReNew. ReNew can be used on ANY brand of spray-on bedliner. The process includes a new textured layer and the use of LINE-X Xtra, so the bedliner will not fade or lose it's gloss.

Prior to ReNew, LINE-X dealers cleaned the bedliner and then applied a special primer prior to the application of the new bedliner product. This also works, but using the primer was not always convenient (for reasons I won't go into, it's a long story).

I can tell you that just cleaning the bedliner and then spraying a new coat will NOT work, no matter what the brand. It will eventually fail by delamination due to poor or no adhesion of the layers.

A local body shop took a truck that needed just one bed side sprayed to a Toff dealer in my area (who is now closed). The rest of the truck bed had LINE-X. The Toff dealer spray the side as well as the rest of the bed so that the entire bed looked the same. Well, the respray failed. The body shop then brought it to us. We had to strip the entire bedliner out and start all over again. Here's some pics of the delamination:

I had this issue after someone hit me last year. The Rhino installer for the PO did not do a good installation and made the bed floor REALLY thick. Spraying over that would have created problems near the tailgate and several other areas. I ended up removing the entire bed liner myself, big job, but well worth it. The new linex liner looks awesome compared to the rhino.
