On a recent camping trip, my dog ripped the headlight on/off knob off of my dimmer switch while left in the truck for about 30 minutes. Only the rotating knob portion was ripped off (including the piece with the contacts for switching the lights on/off), and a couple of the plastic pieces were broken/damaged.
I managed to piece it back together, and I can still cycle between lights off, parking lights, and head lights on. However, the knob doesn't "click" into position anymore, and as a result, I keep accidentally turning my headlights on/off while trying to use the turn signals.
I have a couple questions:
1. Does anyone know if I can get just the knob anywhere? The only way I can order it online is the entire dimmer switch. A friend of mine says it would be tough to find at a local yard. Even if I do find it, does that knob come off the dimmer switch without damage?
2. Assuming I'm replacing the entire dimmer switch, are there any special tools needed? The dealer want $135 to replace it vs. get the part for $40 online. If it's not too difficult to change, I'd rather just do it myself.
Here is the part that I'm replacing:
Dimmer switch
Thanks.
