Not sure what these things are called....
...but maybe you've heard of them.
What you do is, you drill a hole in the frame of your truck, or other thick piece of metal. You then hammer this plug-like thing into the hole. The plug is bored and threaded through the center. This allows you to insert a bolt into the hole without having to tap the hole or weld a nut onto it.
Anyone know what I am talking about, and where can I get them?

Re: Not sure what these things are called....
I believe it's called a bung, or it would be in the case of what I"m thinking. It could also be called a sleeve I guess. I'm sure everyones got a different name for it.
What are you trying to do? What's it needed for?

No, it's got a specific name. I saw them once in a truck magazine.
You know those "expansion bolts" you can buy at Home Depot that you can use to hang things like curtain rods on drywall? You drill a hole, then insert a plastic plug that holds a screw? These things kind of work on the same principle.
I want to bolt a bracket onto the frame of my truck.

Google search for "Heli-coil", "Rivet nut", "Anchor nut", and "Threaded Anchor Nut". One of those is bound to be what you're looking for.

Yep. This is them here:

Now, if I can just figure out where to buy them locally.....

Check on Harbor Fright website or if there is a store locally they have a kit with inserts and installation tool. I use these inserts often.

Re: Not sure what these things are called....
Here are some pics Tim:
Here's how they went in: 1/2" hole + 8mm (8x1.25) nutsert = threaded hole in 1/16" sheet - Photo Gallery
I've used them on multiple projects with great success. My N-Fab bars are held on with nutserts. Can buy them at Grainger, Harbor Freight, NorthernTool, McMaster-Carr, Fastenal, most any hardware/fastener company.
McMaster is the best, outstanding parts selection with pictures and diagrams and shipping is pretty cheap with next day being about $6 for low weight items.
