Default Is it possible to modify the driver seat to go back further for tall owners??

I have a 2002 SR5 4WD Tundra. So far I really like it. The only problem I have is with the driver seat. I am tall and would be more comfortable if the seat went back a little further. I looked at the bolt position and it does not appear to be an easy fix. Does anyone else have this problem? Have you made any modifications?

Thanks...

You could always attempt it yourself---get four 1/4" (minimum thickness) x 2" (wide) x ? (distance to move seat back plus 1") steel plates. Drill 4 holes slightly larger on one end of the plate and drill & tap another 4 holes 10 mm x 1.25 on other side of bracket.

Note: The addittional 1" clearance is to move the drilled locations 1/2" in from edges minimally---increased clearance ups the rigidity.

Make sure you pick up more bolts (4 each 10mm x 1.25 x 30mm [dependent of thickness of plate purchased]), these will be used to fit thru the slightly larger drilled holes and mount to the original locations with the longer bolts. The 4 bolts removed earlier will be used to mount to the brackets drilled & tapped holes.

Added benefit to the mod is the raising of the seat.

Or, take the seat out of the truck and to a metal/welding shop, they should be able to fabricate mounting relocation brackets that move the seat back a few inches. Just ensure you clearly explain what you want.

Hope this insight helps, Good Luck.

I used a peice of flat iron on the front, 4 inches long 1 inch wide 3/8th thick with a lip welded on the top, so it looked like an unside down " L" . in the back I used a piece of 2 inch square tubing. Drilled them out, needed longer bolts for the front floor mounts, the back I used the factory bolts plus 4 bolts and nuts for the seat to the new brackets. The seat only went back about half an inch but up just over two. If I went back more, than I would have to reach too far for the dash, as it is I had to get a longer knob for the gear shift. But my leg doesn't rub against the door any more and I can shift smoother now. If you try this, make sure that the front bracket has the same angle as the seat bracket, the rest is easy to do with only hand tools.

I think the best way is to get a tundra with a power seat. I am 6'3" 240 and the power seat provides plenty of room. I have been in one without a power seat and its a bit tight for me.

Thanks for the info.
I wonder what the cost would be to change to a power seat. I would assume you could use the same seat just different tracks and the motor. I will look into it.
That is really the only thing I do not like about the Truck.

I have the same problem. I am 6'4" and all legs. My last truck (nissan pathfinder) driver's seat went so far back i almost coulnt push the pedals all the way down sitting up as straight as possible. (But then my head hit the roof).

My O3 tundra SR5 dosnt have the power drivers seat and it would be nice if it went back 2" or so further. I noticed it first thing when I got in the truck at the dealership. But after driving it, it's not uncomfortable just a little different.

I have read that the reason for it is to maintain proper distance from the airbag. If you are too far away you will hit the airbag at the wrong time and end up hitting the steering wheel. That is the main reason I have not changed it. But i think I will look at it to see If I can do something different.

HI, thanks for your input. I have herd that with a driver side power seat the seat goes back further. I have not had a chance to check this out to see if it is true. I am hoping that it is. Not sure the cost involved to change over. I will more than likely have my truck a long time so the change may be worth it for me. Regards...

Did you find out about the cost of this and if it can be done. I am interested also because of my long legs!

Hi, recently I went to a dealer and sat in a Tundra with power seats. They do not go back further than the non-power. So far I have hit dead ends in all ways of trying a fix. I can live with it but would rather not.

Regards...

Wadesters,
See posts in aftermarket section by UCK40 about seat rail modification.
I also remember a mod to slightly lift the seats to give a lil more leg room.
HTH,
RichR

Rich, Great news, I will try it over the holidays. The only thing that concerns me is mine is a split bench not a bucket seat. At any rate I am going to take it out to see what I can do. Grinding off tabs on the original seat is of some concern to me. I would rather pay someone so if they screw it up they have to fix it. But I'll try since I do not know anyone that would do this kind of work.

Thanks again...

my feelings exactly- front seat wont go back far enough and front end of truck nose down stance only two things i dislike on the truck.
