if you're on a rather steep hill, or parked with one wheel on a curb or something like that, the truck is being held in place by the transmission being in park (i'm sure everyone knows that) but if you don't press on the brake hard enough to keep the truck from moving when you release it from park, it will make a noise when the gears disengage. this probably isn't a good idea, i step on the brake to prevent it - this is the noise you probably heard, though.

I have only found that mine shifts hard if I am parked on any type of incline. If the truck is level then there is no problem. I do however step on the brake habitually hard being from the pre-tundra school of manual brakes. I get into my truck and its like the pedal falls to the floor when I step on it. That's probably just me though.

I have no clue how this came to be...

I haven't noticed any difference between my truck and other vehicles with this feature. I did test drive a few Ford trucks before I bought my Tundra and I have driven a couple different Tundra's also. I didn't notice any difference. I have 30k miles on my truck now and never had the problem you people are describing.

I had the same problem when my truck was new too. It doesn’t do it anymore though. Nothing with the truck changed though. I have just gotten used to pressing on the pedal firmly before I go to take it out of park. You have to press the pedal much harder on the Tundra than any other vehicle I have ever driven. It gave me a lot of grief when I first got the truck. I just got used to it and now it is habit to press firmly on the pedal. Sometimes I still don’t press hard enough and I can’t get it in gear. I just let go of everything and start over. If you keep pressure on the shift lever and press the pedal harder it wont go into gear either. You need to remove pressure to let the lock pin slide out of the way and then you can put it in gear. Hope this helps.

Boy am i glad i found this place! I was having the same trouble the other morning. I couldn't get it to shift into any gear. I finally stomped on the brake and then it seemed to release the lever. I attributed to it being a new truck and needed to work itself out, but it's happened again at least once. If it keeps up I'll have it checked out, but you know how these non-recurring bugs seem to never happen when the dealer has them
My Tacoma had the opposite problem when it was brand new, it would pop out of gear under acceleration at the worst times. Luckily the dealer was able to replicate it, but he was about the give up, himself. Turns out the bezel was not set right and the gear wouldn't fall into place.

Mine is extremely hard sometimes too. Even after I push the brake all the way down it takes a second sometimes. I believe it is mostly when it's cold though. Does anyone out there know of an adjustment?

My guess is that there must be an adjustment between the break pedal and the switch. On mine, all I have to do is just barely press on the brake and the shift lever will move easily. If such an adjustment exists perhaps the throw can be shortened.

Nah...not stick shift, that would kinda be hard to shift stick with your brake on, while driving...hehe !
I mean the auto column shift lever. All autos require you to depress the brake pedal, but mine you have to depress really far down, unsual than any other car/truck I have ever driven. That's why I wanna see if others have the same problem or if it's just mine that may have something out of wack!

ya I know we moan and b$@*#h sometimes here about certain ridiculous things, so here's mine.
At work I drive pretty much the big three. GSA trucks: S-10 and Ram (this one is really fun to drive). The big econoline van we have is estiennally the same lever found in the F-150's Ford. I can honestly say each has a really easy shift lever. The tundra's is rather tough and one time I heard a really bad clunk as I shifted with the tundra's, almost scared me like I broke a tooth or something (off one of the gears). Pretty much I found out your supposed to depress the brake a good amount to shift that lever, not some dinky press.
Anyone else have that, or I might have something out of adjustment (as far as depressing the brake pedal).
