Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "son of a.... HOLES IN THE DOORS?? WHAT THE?!?!?!", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
so... i go on a stripping spree... debadged, pulled off the pin striping, and i get down to pulling the body side molding off the doors... i get about half an inch into the first piece, and what do i find? HOLES! why in the WORLD did toyota think it necessary to cut physical holes in the doors to mount MOLDING of all things?
i hadnt planned on running a BRAND NEW truck into the paint and body shop just yet... but it looks like i am going to have to now. unless of course, there is some magical cure that i wouldnt know about. maybe solid black bsm.... anyone know where to get it cheap?
There is the thread you want to check out. The general consensus is that you should head down to a body shop and look in person at the different types of BSM available. There is also a link to the manafacturer of some type of BSM that you can try to order. If you do so let me know what you got that matches the black and how much it cost.

yep... it'll look much better if you get smaller color keyed moldings or get the holes completely shaved/repainted at a body shop.... check out my pics... and here's the link to that mentioned thread
i think i am going to just hold out for the bsm from a limited model. the truck my buddy just bought has a solid black painted molding, as opposed to the grey/chrome that came on mine. although i would much rather have them gone all together, i am not too keen on hitting the paint and body shop with it just yet. if i can get the dealership to find me a set, then it will be color matched, and a direct replacement. i think it would look better than what i have at least.
they are probably going to stick it to me on the price... but anything is better than the crap i have on there now.
Didn't some of the aftermarket BSM people went with match and only cost around 30$? 500$ Is crazy
everything that i have seen is aftermarket replacement... cut to fit. i'd rather stay away from that if possible... yes, it would save me hundreds of dollars, but unfortunately, i'm a perfectionist... so i would go through a billion pieces before hand.
If your spending 5 bills on the Limited molding, why dont you just get it shaved for $1g? Trust me, you will probably just shave it later and waste $500 on the molding you will eventually throw out.
I have the Penn Industries BSM. Its black matte, so I have to get it painted eventually. Some reputable shop quoted me $625 to get it shaved and painted.
But Merzees custom paint & body(most of the stuff you see in Truckin') quoted me $3500.
If your worried about doing body work to your new truck, better new since you have to repaint the doors and the paint wont look off.
Say if you want to shave your door handles, tailgate handles, etc. I'd get that done at the same time.

I am a definite perfectionist and I got it right the first time with cutting my own molding. White is the worst color to match also, if I had a black truck I would not hestitate at all with after-market molding. $80 versus $500+, I took my chances and am glad I did - I had $400 bones left over to buy a new set of wheels!

thats just it... i AM planning on shaving the handles, tailgate, and a few other minor pieces that i want to do... but dont have time to get it done just yet. but... at the same time, if i have to look at that damn grey strip plastered on the side of my truck again, i am going to shoot myself.
eventually (probably in a year or so) after the engine work is done, i was planning a massive paint job, and am kicking the idea around of a ghost tribal flame design... if i jump out of order, that is going to throw a massive wrench into my plans, and/or waste a hell of a lot more than just $500.
i think i am going to give the aftermarket a try just to see how it looks... if it comes out ok, then i'll be set... if not, then i will jsut have to leave the truck in the garage for a day or two until the dealer can get the limited moldings for me.
you know the funny thing is... i always tell myself when i get a new vehicle, any modifications i do will just be "mild" this time. that lasts right up until i get home and look at it again. i should probably get help for this addiction... but it'll have to wait until the truck is done.
can anyone suggest a good place to buy from online?
Just wondering if you've thought about covering the holes and textured lower half with Linex/Rhino/Herculiner or something like that. I've seen several of my friends truck lower section done this way. It seems to prevent more chips from happening and looks pretty sweet to boot. I'm planning the Herculiner way to help cut cost.
ehh... thanks for the suggestion. i am sure that would probably look pretty tough on a 4x4, but it really wouldnt fit this truck. something about spray on bed liner, sitting next to 22" chrome wheels.... just doesnt look right.
