Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Toppers/Shells?", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I'm about to buy a new Tundra (either the 4WD Access Cab or the 4WD Double Cab) and I was wondering what peoples' experiences with shells or toppers have been. I've had a Leer topper on my '92 Toyota 4x4 and it has been pretty good, but I've heard mixed reviews about Leer toppers and the Tundras. Some of the other ones I've looked at are various models by SnugTop and by A.R.E.

A.R.E is my only topper experience.Do not get the framed winows and door. The gaskets kept coming out from in between the aluminum frames and fiberglass topper. After 1 year warrenty was up too bad.I'd go with the flush windows, but its probably more$$.No other problems.Had the truck 5 years(RAM no more)

Leer legend here. This is my second Leer, the last one I had 7 years and not one problem. Paint matches real close to OEM and held real well.
This one I got the removeable pass through window...get it! You can clean the cab window inside, without it, it always is a bit dirty between canopy and cab. Also recomend the carpeted liner, it helps prevent sweating.
I have a LEER 122 Hi-Top on both my T100 short bed
and my Tundra long bed. The Tundra cap is color matched
and I went with the removeable rear window. Great option...
I have the SnugTop SuperSport on my 2002 Access Cab. Very nice fit and finish. Its carpeted on the inside and accomodates the bedrails seamlessly. Its been watertight and faily dust free. Even the color match is pretty good. Only issue I've had with it is when I had some racks installed. The guy at the rack store said there's not enough "meat" around the windows to use the raingutter-type mounts. He said he could not assure me that those mounts would hold heavy loads without failing. I went with the rack rails.

One issue with most canopies is where the canopy door contacts the rear gate, the stock rail cover is a bit short so the rubber seal actually contact the paint. I made this mistake once before, and eventually it left a line in the paint that would never rub out.
I want a slightly longer tailgate cap then the OEM, and in black to match....anyone know where to get a decent one?

Just checked my door/canopy fit. No part of the rear door touches the paint.
If you can't find a longer cap, maybe that Excel plastic might work.

I looked at a Glasstite raven "high rise" yesterday. Look's to be high Quality, does anyone have any input on a Glasstite shell?
I have a Raven Cap on my 2000 Acess Cab, that the previous owner put on. I love it. I have had no problems at all with it and the color is matched perfectly. I like the fact that it has a dome light and 2 latches on the door.
I rigged a system in my garage to lift it off if i need to.
This is a good thread since i'm selling my truck soon to get the DC and i'm debating getting a new cap or going with a hard folding tonneau cover.
thanks cb10, I am going to get it. While I wait, I am dreaming up the schematic to run the 12 volt (camper shell dome light) thru the factory "cargo" light switch. Does anybody think with the added hieght of the shell pulling my pontoon boat might not be as bad as it is now ( like pulling a para-sail. lol )
My dome light is connected into my tailights. I have to have my parking lights or headlights on for it to work.

When I had my shell installed, they wired a dome light so I can turn it on at any time. Don't have to have my parking or headlights on. I'm sure where ever you get it installed, they can do the same for you.

I've got the exact same longbed and have been looking at caps... leer looks the best of what I've seen so far. If you don't mind me asking what did your longbed cap run you? Thanks, Nicholas
