Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Bed alignment troubles", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I picked up my brand new 03 Tundra the day after Thanksgiving. On the way home I notice that the bed sticks out about a quarter inch on the right side, (I also notice that the steering wheel shimmies at 55-65 mph and the floor mats are missing.) I head back the next day and they order a set of mats and schedule an appt. to fix the shimmy and the bed. They balance the front tires and the shimmy is fixed They tell me to bring it back in three days and their body shop will fix the bed . I take it in today and get a call this afternoon that the bed alignment is not adjustable and that they will escalate to the factory. WTF? They are talking about maybe changing the bed. Has anyone had a similar problem. I would expect this if it were a GMC, I am a bit disapointed in Toyota's quality control as I've been back to the dealer three times for stuff that should have been caught before it was ever put on the lot.
unless things have changed, the bed is held on by four T50 torx bolts. loosen them and bump it into alignment. don't hold me to this, it may have changed for '04. at any rate it has to be adjustible.
That's what I thought. There are actually six bolts. They say there is no adjustment, I think they are wrong. If this was not a brand new truck I would do it myself. Now that they are getting the factory rep involved I will wait to see what turns up.

I had the same problem with my 2003 when I bought it. I also saw a few others on the lot with the same problem. Anyways, my dealer also tried loosening the bed bolts as that would be the logical solution, but, like yours probably did, found that there is not enough movement to solve the problem.
They sent me over to the main bodyshop they own and the solution was to move the front cab, not the bed. It only has to be shifted a tiny bit to solve the problem. These guys were good, took very little time and the bed is still straight...
I'd bring this up to your dealer if you want it flush on both sides the way it should be.
The room for lateral movement is quite small for the bed. The cab is the one that has wiggle room- and its a bit more complex than just loosening up the bed, but it can be done

...this is why they came out with those little black plastic shoehorn looking pieces for the bed corners. pretty much every tundra ive ever seen, and many tacomas, have the same issue.
After reading these posts on bed/cab alignment I checked mine and sure enough it is also out of alignment However my truck is a 2001 with 32,000 miles that I just picked up about a month ago My question would be is this covered uner the warranty or do I just Have to go to my local body shop to get this corrected?

You should still be under warranty because your truck's less than 3 years old and has less than 36,000 miles on it.

So is mine but I would say only by about a quarter of an inch. I can live with it if it's the only problem I have.

I noticed the same problem the first time I washed mine last February. I took it to the dealer for the first (and last) complimentary oil change. Told them to straighten out the bed. The service lane rep said the bed looked fairly straight and there was no way to adjust it anyway. I told them I knew other people (TS members) with the same problem and it is correctable. When I picked up the truck, the bed was straight, but I did not ask how it was done.
My concern was that the protruding edge was going to get chipped up.

Mine too, on the passenger side. Noticed it a couple weeks after buying it. Also noticed "ticking" noise from the exhaust manifold and another noise from maybe a belt. Only have 1300 miles and still would'nt trade it for one the "Big 3".
