This is a discussion thread titled "Tool Box & ATV in the Bed???", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I haul around my ATV quite a bit in my tundra. I have been wanting to get a truck box to put my tools and stuff in but I know my ATV won't fit very nicely in the bed if I do. It's a pretty good sized machine (Polaris 400) and the rear wheels would rest on the tailgate (even now I have to keep the tailgate down when it's loaded). Is that a "no-no" or is the tailgate strong enough to hold that weight? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks
I have an in bed toolbox, and I haul my YFZ in the back of my Tundra-no worry's. I pull it up tight against the toolbox with ratchet straps-then set the park brake. My bike only weigh's 350 lb. dry, and I know the 4wd quads weigh a bit more. So, load it up and see what it looks like. I built an aluminum rack that fits the top of my toolbox, to haul my gearbags, icechest and whatever else.
Have you ever thought about a bed extender? On my old Wolverine 4x4, we used to haul it in our T100 and still have room. It safely lets you use the tailgate completely.

I've got a weatherguard toolchest that takes a foot away from the bed and have a Polaris 400 i carry around. I haven't had any problems with the tailgate. The ATV is light enough on the back axle that i can pick it up without too much effort. Also, i tie it down by the front rack of the ATV and that seems to lighten the back end of it. I've even seen the back end of the ATV move over a few inches after long trips, so i assume it can't be too heavy on the tailgate.
You Load up the ATV by riding it up a set of ramps i assume. So if you are able to put the entire load on the ramps, which are supported by the very end of the tailgate, then the rear tires should have no affect on the tailgate whatsoever.
