Default DIY bedlines?

Has anyone here done or know someone that has done the DIY roll on or spray in bedliners? How involved and how good to they hold up compared to line-x and rhino?

Default Herculiner

I did the DIY Herculiner (roll-on) about 6 months ago. Got it at one of the car parts chains for $100 ($80 for the 1 gallon kit plus $20 for an extra quart - 1 gallon wasn't enough). I read somewhere how important it is to rough up the surface so I spent about 3 hours with a sander and 60-grit sandpaper preparing the surface. I also had to buy some ketone and a paint mixer separate (at Home Depot). The ketone is for final preparation before putting on the liner and the paint mixer is to mix the herculiner stuff up - it has little rubber things in it and they settle after a few minutes.

It really looks great and has held up perfect. I've hauled some large woodworking tools (table saw), alot of wood, my dog, etc. and so far no chips. It starts out shiny but fades to a matte black after a couple months (I happen to like the matte look over the shiny look) It definitely isn't even close to the thickness that would you get with Rhinoliner but for 1/3 the price, it's a good alternative.

I also did the diy roll-on. I had 2 coats. Actually 2.5 coats. If I had to do it again i'll use 3 gallons next time. Pretty easy, just time comsuming. I had my neices and nephews do the prep work. Gave the kids sand paper and in an hour the bed was all scuffed up. Free labor and fun for the kids. I did the cleaning and rolling-on.

I put a Herculiner in an 95 Sierra in early 97. Traded the truck off in late Spring 99. As stated above, the Herculiner had faded to a matte black, but other than that it looked brand new. I carried everything from dirt to sheet metal, never managed to damage the liner. Like stated above, very time consuming so plan on spending the better part of a day getting it right.
