This is a discussion thread titled "Rear Bumper - Fix Or Replace", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Hello smart people. I have a 2003 Phantom Gray Pearl rear bumper with a new dent in it. It caused the top part of the bumper to push upward toward the tailgate. It looks bad. I took a picture and posted it on the members gallery site (not sure how to reference the number). I'll take another picture tomorrow in better light. Any thoughts (with cost estimate) on replacement?
I think your better off getting it replaced. I have seen none chrome rear bumpers on ebay for a 150 bucks. This is just the bumper with no plastic pads. It would probably be another 100 bucks to paint.
Get out the hammer! I guess I'd replace it...but since your going to replace it see if you can't bend it back, I mean if you make it worse who cares? Your going to replace it anyway.

Looks like besides the dimple it is also bent down some. Do you have any dings on the quarter panel behind the bumper edges?
To take out the dimple, use a long flat head screwdriver, flip it around so that the hard plastic part of the handle is aginst the inside of the dimple from backside underneath and whack the screw dirver tip carefully a few times with a hammer to try to get it smoother. A length of 3/8" round steel bar will do as well. It will be tuff to get it all the way out and there will likely be residual paint damage. To bend the bumper edge back up use your jack and put a few 2x4s on top of the jack and under the bumper- jack up till it looks OK. Carefull that the bumper edges don't dig into the quarter panel and dont over do it
Good luck

If im not too late you could have the bumper pressed and rechromed at a local chrome shop. They did it to mine (twice!) and it looks shinier than new and perfectly straight. I was suprised what they could take out. It was around $150 inc tax.

Thanx Blender, but my bumper is currently the painted type. I'm gonna ask the bodyshop near my house what they think they can do/how much they'll charge. I'll keep you folks posted. Many thanx!
