This is a discussion thread titled "Removing tint from rear window?", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I just had a Snugtop XV cap installed on my truck and it came with a tinted rear window. When the tint on the cap's rear window is combined with that on my Tundra's rear window, the result is a very dark tint (i.e., hard to see what's behind me).
Is it possible to remove the tint from the sliding rear window on a Tundra, and if so, how would I do it?
Thanks!

I think if the privacy glass in your truck came factory, then the tint is actually part of the glass itself (ie no film). If the dealer tinted your windows and charged you as an option, then it likely is only a film that can be peeled off. I'm going to guess that it came from Toyota this way and cannot be changed easily.

I'm 99% sure it's part of the glass itself. I've only seen one Tundra with a non-tinted, single piece window (some member on here, but can't remember who...). I think your only option would be replacing the glass.

It would probably be pretty cheap to have a glass shop replace the slider with new glass. Or do you want to do the entire rear window? Might get a little spendy there.

I have the same thing. I usually just leave the slider open so at least I can easily see out the middle portion of the window. Of course, now I have to look thru 3 tinted windows on the passengers side. Eventually I'm going to add some extra lights that turn on w/ my reverse lights.

One thing that I have done that helps a whole bunch is the addition of additional reverse lights under the bumper (see my pics).
Plus another thing that helps in backing up against something is a small convex mirror. I have a rectangular, suction cup, adjustable mirror stuck to the inside of the rear, upper corner, passanger side of the rear window that points toward the rear bumper, thus you can see a wall, bumper or the like before you use the brail method or backing (bump).

Well, it took an "incident" involving the garage door, my son's stroller, and a bit of haste but I finally had a chance to take off my SnugTop and get serious about replacing the rear slider with the privacy glass with something I could see out of. I had my truck at the dealership's body shop to repair some damage a CO state truck had done to the bed so I asked them about replacing a tinted sliding rear window with a clear one. They found out that Toyota does make a clear (actually, it has a very light green tint) slider, and that they charge about $200 more for that than for the darkly-tinted privacy glass! go figure (the end price would be over $600)!
Anyway, I started calling local glass shops and found a Novus dealer that tracked down a clear sliding rear window that could be installed for under $400. A quick call to my wife to get clearance (easy to do, because this was a "safety issue") and I can now see out of the rear window at night.
Now if only I could convince my wife that JBA headers, a set of subwoofers, and a UniChip are also "safety" items!
