Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Things on your Tundra...(add ons or features)", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
My 94 Camry had one of those levers inside that opened the gas tank and so does my 03 Lexus, now that would be nice...
99% of people I know who own or have previoulsy owned Toyotas have same hmmmm and thats that the seatbelts dont go up. U think they would of fixed this by now...
The little metal flap was to keep people from dumping regular gas in even though the hole to the tank was smaller. They don't make the larger diameter nozzle any longer because you can't get leaded gas any longer.
Thank You.
I was guessing they increased the vehicle weight so it was exept from whatever requirement needed the little metal door. I had no idea what it actually did, but now I do and it makes sense that you do not need it. (When I first noticed it, I was actually wondering if it had fallen off into the tank-I was happy to find that is just wasn't there to begin with!)
There is no locking gas cap made that will fit our trucks that wont cause the CEL to come on from vent style change. if you find one that works let me know cause ive checked all over and havnt found one that fits right- even the 3 diffrent ones listed at autozone -not one of them fit right, my engine is worth more than the rest of my truck i belive a locking gas cap is a great idea but ..............................cant get one !
Yep, Stant 11506, had it on since November 02. Got it at Pepboy's for about 11 bucks. Works great.
Ok, I've had my Tundra for 2 months and I found a few things that just seemed different than normal expectations.
I started this thread to share and find answers to these ponderings.
I don't want to turn this into a complaint forum, But a place to figure out:
Why did they do that?
The first two I have is:
Why did they eliminate the little metal door on the gas filler nozzle, that I have seen on every other unleaded car?
Why does the off road package have 16" wheels, not the 17" ones that are available. I would think 17" wheels would provide more ground clearance?
Hmmmmmmmmmm
For the record: I HATE THE LOCKING FUEL DOOR. Has anyone ever had sugar put in their gas tank? C'mon...really? Why izzit that the Camry has an internal switch for the fuel door and my Tundra requires me taking the keys out of the ignition?
Hmmmmm....why can the Japanese design a truck than can competer with the big three in terms of reliability, price, and performance and THEY CAN'T DESIGN A STUPID SEATBELT THAT WORKS RIGHT?!???
Hmmmmm....why are the body panels made of the THINNEST metal possible? Every time I bump, scrape, or otherwise tap the darn thing I wind up with a $1000 repair bill?

I wondered about the seatbelts, too. Looking at it one day, I noticed that the spring loaded reel seemed to have enough oomph to pull the belt up, but there was too much friction where the belt goes through the loop. I got a thin piece of rag (gun cleaning patch) and cleaned the grundge on the loop under the belt. Then I used Armor-All on it to make it as slick as possible. Pulled the belt through the loop a few times hard and fast. Belt now retracts like new.

Wouldnt that dirty up the belt too and get what ever your wearing dirty...
Take in mind this isnt a good dirty but a bad dirty, cause the only good bad dirty I can think of goes by the name xtina aguilera.

Man, don't use a bunch of Armor-All. A drop or less will do. Just enough to make the plastic of the belt loop as slick as possible. The belt obviously has some kind of dirt on it, since there is black grundge on the plastic loop before the cleaning. Try this, stand outside the truck and pull the belt across and snap it in as if you were sitting inside. Look at the loop. If your belt is like mine, it does not come straight off the loop. The belt rides up the side of the loop a little, causing additional friction that keeps the belt from retracting quickly. It was engineered this way. My guess is that it doesn't fly back and into the door. You could sand the plastic away from the belt to open up the opening and further reduce this friction.
As for the other kind of dirty, well, there's other web sites for that.

I have noticed a few things that make me go "hmmmmmm"....
I'm sure you know the '03 and up models have the "auto-start" feature. As in, stick the key in the ignition, turn it to "On", crank for just a split second, and the truck will do the rest. Pretty neat, hmmmm?
Speaking of keys, I don't know how many of you have actually used the key to unlock the doors... On my access cab passenger side, when turning the key to unlock the door, it'll unlock both doors. On the driver side, turn it one way to unlock just the driver side door, then turn it the other way to unlock both doors. hmmmm...
Some downers I have noticed...why doesn't the wiper motor work when the vehicle's key is in the "on/acc" position (vehicle must be running)? And why can't you eject a CD w/o the key in the ignition? That's all I can think of for the time being.
I really haven't noticed any other interesting things that haven't already been mentioned.
I wonder if the '05 Tundras have any cool features (besides the motor) that the prior models didn't have. Any new owners have any interesting info?

Headrests that push my head forward and make my neck hurt. I turned the driver's one around so it's backwards. Much better!
Cheap a$$ stock tires, noisier than hell.
Clock position.
No locking storage inside the cab, console or glove box.
Can't roll windows up on ACC.
Worst of all, the two front door windows that act like they're just held in by gravity--they bounce and shake over bumps. They also get frozen to the outer weather stripping way to easily, even when it's 30 outside and it hasn't rained. Anyone know a fix for that which wouldn't smear the window?
It was 37 degrees F this morning when I got in my truck. After starting it, I looked at the mirror and it read "ICE" instead of the temperature. It would do that for about 5 seconds, then go to the current temp. Then back to the "ICE"... it did this for about 3 minutes... I remember seeing this when I was in Nebraska last X-mas.
Does it read "FIRE" when the temps get above 130?

Great photo!
05 hmmms...
1. Locking glove box is a plus imo.
2. Weird Shift L button by the radio for maximum braking (Thats what the owner's manual says!) Push the button then move the shifter to 3. I think if I need to brake that bad I'll have more on my mind then this button.
3. The redesigned bench seat has the armrest incorporated into the passenger seat now with a middle headrest. I took off headrest because for me it created a big ol blindspot. Also this design doesn't let you reach between the seats anymore .
4. The "tire pressure system" - another idiot light - 10 plus pages added to the owners manual. (ok so I exaggerate alittle, but its still alot) Give me that ICE/Temperture indicator any day as standard equipment. Where I live that is useful information!!
my 2 cents

I have yet to discover the mystery of the temp mirror. It is now standard on the DC, but in my region, what once was available is no more in the access cab. The temp mirror is very desirable in the Rocky Mountains where we have freezes on mountain roads. It's really a safety feature to know outside temp. in my area.
I do not know why you can't get it as an option now (yes, it is expensive to add as a dealer option). It is an Access cab option in anyone's region?
Although I love my Tundra, there are a few things that bug me:
1. The position of the armrests on the Captain's chairs -- Totally wrong height and far too narrow -- I don't even use them.
2. Dash sqeaks -- I've seen the threads on fixing this, and I'll try them soon.
3. Angle of the backseat -- I've also seen the thread on that fix, and am heading to the hardware store tomorrow to try that fix.
4. So-so chrome grill. I'm looking into a billet replacement. However, since I've spent so much on the truck, I'm laying low for a while so my wife doesn't complain.
