This is a discussion thread titled "Going to Debadge, Last Minute Check", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I am going to debadge my truck (see signature for model) tomorrow. I want to remove the SR5 badges as well as the passenger/drivers side door & tailgate badges (excluding the iforce V8 badge).
I want to make sure removing these badges will not leave any holes in the body. Will it?
I also want to know what supplies I will need. I have a ton of dental floss if that will work or do I need fishing line? I also have a can of sray Motsenbocker's Lift Off 2 Tape Romover for adhesives, grease & oily stains. Supposed to zap stickers, crayon & gum. I just hope it doesn't zap clear coat.
Any last minute suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
There's no holes behind the badges you listed. I've used both waxed floss and fishing line, they both will work. Most of the mounting tape will roll right off if you rub it with your fingers. I cleaned up the residue with some citrus based cleaner, if you're unsure test it in a hidden spot first.
IMHO-fishing line will work better than dental floss. After the badges are removed, wash the area with some car wash to clean the area. This should help get rid of the dirt before you start rubbing the adhesive and avoid those fine scratches.
I took off the tailgate this morning and brought it in the house. I used a hair dryer (I have a hot air gun but thought that might be overkill) and detal floss to remove the Toyota Tundra badge. I found that if I doubled the floss I could get through about one letter at a time before it broke. I got a little too eager and cracked the badge between a couple of letters, oops.
I am pleasantly surprised at how easy it was. I am going to do the door badges next. I think I will leave the SR5 badges on for now. I am thinking of taking off my chrome wheel arch mouldings for a cleaner look as well.

You can also use a cheap plastic putty knife.
I tried both methods. The knife left less adhesive on the truck to get off.
Also I think you will have holes in the fenders where the wheel arch moldings attach.
I left the SR5 badges and TRD stickers on.

Correct me if I am wrong but you took the tailgate off to get the badges off?
That is a first and what seems to be more work than it was worth.
I hope you don't plan on taking the doors off to get the badges off too?
It took me all of 15 minutes to completely debage my truck.
Use some fishing line, gloves and quick detailer spray, remove tape with fingers, and wax.
I have the doors off now but don't remember which one goes on which side!

You can pull off the tail gate in about 15 seconds with no tools...which is why I leave mine locked all the time. But I do agree, it only took me 15 minutes to debadge my truck as well.

Oh I know it is easy to remove the tailgate, but you also run the chance of dropping it, scratching it, denting whatever.
It is big and sort of heavy and just never would have thought of removing the tailgate to debadge. Maybe you are on to something? Or is that "on something?"
If you have the doors off, try putting the suicide doors on the fronts, that way at highway speeds you can get more air flow through the cabin!

Well the wheel arch moldings stay. When I took the front ones off there a clip that sticks out that is attached with a plastic piece that I would have to break and I don't want to. There is alot of crud under those things though. I am going to wash the truck before I stick them back on.
