Interior & ExteriorDiscussions about the interior, and exterior of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Access Cab window latch broke....", within the Interior & Exterior forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
The piece between the gray handle and the black piece mounted to the inside of the window frame just snapped. It looks to be a small black plastic piece that really does all the moving when the window is being opened and closed. It is held in place with a pin on each end.
I did a search, and all I could find was someone who had the same problem and was taking it into the shop. In lieu of this...
1) Do you think I can find the part myself?
2) Would it be hard to install? I am assuming the the pins would have to be punched out, and new ones tapped into place.
The samething happened to my tundra. I went down to my local toyota stealership and bought the part. It was something like $30.
All you need to do this is a screwdriver. The hardest part is getting all the panels and stuff off the access door. After that, it's VERY easy to swap out the broken one with the new one.
There are instructions on how to take apart the access door in the garage section, but you have to pay to get access to it.

Yeah, mine broke too. A long time ago. I don't use those windows anymore. That part shouldn't cost $30, just like a brand new tailgate shouldn't cost $900 Go to a junkyard and see if you can pull an old one for like $5.

If my futual (sp?) search for the latch on line, I cam across a couple of site that had tailgates for $4 hundy and change. Do a google search before dropping the 9 big ones.
I have a 2002, so I might be SOL. Why they used a piece of plastic as the middle link between two pieces of metal is beyond me..... a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link

I agree. I would never pay full retail price for a new tailgate. I have a friend that can get me the parts at dealer cost plus tax. Then I'd have to paint it and get it set to my key. Would still be around $600... but it would be a perfect match.
A good site for used parts is www.car-part.com . I found the $300-$400 tailgates you were talking about the night my tailgate was stolen.
Actually after posting here on TS that someone stole my tailgate, I had a bunch of PMs from people offering help or even wanting to sell their tailgates for reasonable prices. After a senseless crime, I was pissed off at the world. But the people at TS have restored some faith in me.
I just called the stealership, they said the part would be around $36 .
I would prefer to purchase this on my own, but I can't find it anywhere on the web??? What I need is the window latch, for the access window, on the passengers side.
Since you have a 2002 you should still be covered under your original 3yr/36k warranty. Even if you are over on your mileage I'd go to the dealer and talk to them and see what they say.
Furthermore, if i were you i'd go to the dealer with the TSB and argue that even though your year isn't covered, they obviously haven't resolved the issue.
I'd say the dealer/Toyota will probably cover it under warranty or good will.

Nice website. Too bad I'm not sure what everything is called. It breaks everything down by name, but I would need a translator for most of it. Found the part you listed, though.
It's under Rear Door -> Glass and Hardware -> Lock Assy -> Pick a color
Like many of you I had both my original latches replaced under warranty despite the fact that I rarely opened those windows, becase the cheap plastic link cracked, and the replacement links started cracking in the same place a year later.
I am very disappointed to learn that they haven't improved the parts, and that they only sell them as part of a very expensive latch assemble. Shame on Toyota.
Not about to spend the money for new ones, I got some small pieces of aluminum and made a pair of replacement ones that should never break. I used the broken ones as a guide and used a die grinder with a carbide bit to do the final shaping. They look and work just like the original ones, and only look different becase I left them bright aluminum instead of painting them black.
Final cost to me, about 1/2 hour of my time, and $0.50 cents worth of aluminum.
Has anyone asked you to make/sell these to those of us with the same problem? Seems like you did a really nice job. Probably could make enough to keep yourself well stocked with your favorite beverage.
