Default Access Cab - how comfortable?

I'm getting either the double or the access cab.

I will be putting someone in the back seat rarely.

But when I do, it'll be my teenage daughter (14, 5'6") for long trips (3+ hours) to basketball games.

Will she survive in the back of the access cab or do I really need a double cab? Suppose I'm carrying a friend of hers in the back also.

Opinions?

I just say get the double cab. The back of the access cab can be really UNCOMFORTABLE. I have the access cab and my friends (3 teenages also in the back) complain just taking a 40 minute trip to go to another beach. Its okay if your going anywhere local. Most people dont complain about being in the back seat on road trips after the first hour. So a 3+ hour trip to a basketball game and some gear would most likely be uncomfortable in an access cab. That is just my opinion and facts about the access cab. Then again, take your daughter in both model trucks of the DC and the AC and see how she feels sitting in the back. =)

I'd say if you are using the back seat for passengers only rarely, get the access cab. It should be easier to park, have better performance, and get better mileage. My Mom is about 5'7" and has ridden back there several times for trips of around 200 miles. Once we went on a trip that was about 5 hrs. one way, and she was able to climb out without being too cramped up, and she's 84 now. The only problem I have is getting around the access doors when you are parked close to someone, and need to get into the back.

I have an Access Cab and I agree that the rear seat in its stock configuration is not comfortable for long trips. Doing the rear seat mod - placing spacers to move the lower part of the seat forward about an inch and a half or so - helps to make it more comfortable. However, it is NOT more comfortable than the unmodified DC configuration (I have had a chance to sit in both). For myself, even with the limitation of the rear seat in the Access Cab, I would not opt for the DC because the DC is 13" longer and, as noted by Dude Boy, it will be a pain to park.

Ive sat in both, if your car pooling alot get the DC. I usually never have more than 2 people so I could care less. I would love to take the back bench and captain chairs out and put some trick buckets in their place. Sorta triangle/ prerunner style, this setup would give me more leg room for rear passengers and more storage space in the rear.

Default Access

I have an access cab and travel with our four children and wife up to our cabin (2 hours each way). The oldest is 11 and we have no complaints. I've sat in the back for the trip on one occassion and hated it due to the upright angle. Mine is a 2000 and perhaps the newer models may have more of an angle. I know there is a link here somewhere to recline the seating position more and I guess it helps. Bottom line, if you're not hauling adults back there get the access, do the modification to recline the back seats and have fun in an outstanding truck.

Kids fit fine in my access cab. My GF has 3 and its not a problem to get them back there. I have sat back there, and I fit, but I wouldn't want to sit back there for a long period of time. I am going to do the seat mod and see what that does.

We did the double cab introduction where I work, and it is a sweet truck. But most of the tests I have seen on it all say it is underpowered, and I think that would be frustrating to deal with. If you slap a SC on it, then all would be good.

As for parking, just park out away from everyone else.

question is how big are you?
the reason i ask is because if your my size 6' tall then your drivers seat will be in the furthest position back giving no legroom to anyone behind you unless they happen to be under 110lbs. but if your not going to have the drivers seat all the way back then get the acc. cab for better fuel eco., simple parking effort, and less money. If it will be only once in a while then i say go for the acc. cab. Also befor you buy the truck , YOU sit in the back seat and figure out if you want your family or friends to ride back there

Thanks for the feedback.

I am 5'10" and I drive with the seat generally not too far pushed back and am willing to compromise for the sake of the kid in back on those rare trips.

I will look for info on the seat mod here.

I'm leaning to the Access for the smaller size.

I am 230 lbs and 6" tall and I sat in the back seat of an Access Cab (with back seat mod) for about four hours. You have to move the seats around a bit to accomodate, and this was for four adults and all their snowboarding gear. While uncomfortable--it wasn't unbearable. If you do go with the Access Cab immediately do the back seat mod with some spacers, it'll cost you about $5-10 and about 20 minutes and it is well worth it.

i have the spacers in the rear as well and feel the difference but i still would rather own the DC. the leg room is the main issue to me. the spacer might help the angle but doesnt add leg room...i would get the DC if i had a choice.. but i still love my acess

Get the access cab if you want to punish her or get the D-cab if you don't want her to be all tensed up when she plays(assuming you are going to watch her play).

I had 3 guy friends 5'8" and above and made them sit in the back for a 6 hour trip in my access cab. They had no choice because a girl friend(not girlfriend, whatever) sat in the front and I drove. Let's just say they couldn't feel there arse and legs after about an hour and I refused to stop. LOL

I just traded my 2002 V6 4X2 SR5 Access Cab for a 2004 Double Cab SR5 4X4. I loved the Access Cab, but I found it very restrictive transporting adults for more than a 30 minute ride. If Toyota had not introduced the DC I'm sure I would have kept the Access Cab for years.
